  1. Realism FTW...

    (B) No trains between Prospect Park and Coney Island.

    (D) No trains between Bay Parkway and Coney Island.

    (F) No trains between Av X and Coney Island. Selected southbound trains terminate at 18 Av.

    (N) No trains between 86 St and Coney Island.

    (Q) No trains between Kings Highway and Coney Island.

    NEXT

7 Av FasTrack has taken too long. As a result, both express tracks are impassable at 23 St.

  2. (A) To Far Rockaway or Ozone Park, late nights.

    Other times on express track.

    (C) To Euclid Avenue, all times except late nights.

    Late nights take (A).

    (D) To Lower East Side-2 Av, late nights.

Other times take (7) to 5 Av for (D) to Coney Island.

    (E) To World Trade Center, all times.

    (F) To Coney Island-Stillwell Av, late nights.

Other times take (7) to 5 Av for (F).

Other times, only (C) and (E) stop here.

Much appreciated and sorry if it's a lot.

Since this appears to be a real sign, I'd like to point out that the (A) doesn't directly go to Ozone Pk late nights.

  3. While it may be unfortunate for customers, the reality of a 100+ year old system, with about 20 years of no maintenance whatsoever, has caught up to the MTA.

And finally, it's not like the entire subway is shutting down! It's only one line, a dozen or so stations, for four consecutive weeknights.

  4. I'd think the line would be shut down farther, maybe even to QBP/QP.

    Assuming that:

    (F) Manhattan-bound trains run via the (E) from Roosevelt Av to 5 Av/53 St.

    (N) No trains between Queensboro Plaza and 21 St - Queensbridge. The southern section operates via the (D) from Atlantic/Pacific to 47/50 St.

    (Q) Trains run via the (D) from Atlantic/Pacific to 47/50 St, then proceed to terminate at 21 St - Queensbridge.

    (R) Service ends early - Brooklyn shuttle starts at 10 PM.

    Alternate routes:

    (N) Use the (7) (QBP to 42 St) to connect between sections.

    (Q) Use nearby 6 Av stations.

    (R) Use the (D)(N) at nearby 6 Av stations to connect to the shuttle at 36 St.

    OR, an easier alternative.

    (N) No trains between Queensboro Plaza and Queens Plaza. The southern section runs via the (D) from Atlantic/Pacific to 47/50 Sts, then via the (E) to Queens Plaza.

    (Q) Trains run via the (D) from Atlantic/Pacific to 47/50 Sts, then via the (E) to Queens Plaza.

    (R) Service ends early - Brooklyn shuttle starts at 10 PM.

    Alternate routes:

    (N) Use the (7) (QBP to 42 St) to connect between sections or walk from Queens Plaza to Queensboro Plaza via a free out-of-system transfer.

    (Q) Use nearby 6 Av stations.

    (R) Use the (D)(N) at nearby 6 Av stations to connect to the shuttle at 36 St.

  5. Well I would just reroute the R instead of cutting it.

    Your what if

A Operates to Coney via D south of W.4 street

    B/C suspended

D operates to The Rockaways/Lefferts Boulevard

    E Operates to 2 Avenue

F operates along Croostown, via the D to the E then normal, or via Broadway

    G Suspended

M service runs as a shuttle from 8PM to 6AM and via 8 Avenue during other times

I'll repeat - you should really check your proposals on a track map. A trains can't switch to the bridge tracks south of W4 St.

Here's what I would do. This provides more consistent service with the same tph as normal on all lines. In addition, no services are suspended or split:

(;)(D) Trains run via the (Q) from Atlantic - Pacific to 57 St/7 Av, then via the (F) to 179 St. Note that (D) trains skip Dekalb Av.

    (C) Trains run express in between 145 St and Canal St.

    (E) Selected trains skip 23 and Spring Sts. Service reduced very slightly.

    (F) Trains run via the (C) from W4 to 145 Sts, then via the (D) to 205 St.

    (M) Trains run via the (E) from W4 St to 5 Av/53 St.

(N)(Q) Trains run via the (R) from Atlantic - Pacific to 57 St/7 Av.

Summary of lines with altered service:

    Concourse - (F), 15 tph

    QBL Exp - (B)(D)(E), 30 tph

    8 Av Lcl - [(E)](F)(M), 30 tph

    8 Av Exp - (A)(C)[(E)], 25 tph

    B'way Exp - (B)(D), 16 tph

    B'way Lcl - (N)(Q)(R), 25 tph

    6 Av - 0 tph (obviously)

The only line that sees any reduction in service (except 6 Av) is Concourse (16 tph->15 tph).

    NEXT

Broadway Line FasTrack has taken too long. The Broadway Line is closed from Queens(boro) Plaza to Dekalb Av. A full rush hour must be run with this restriction. Provide as much alternate nearby service as possible if service reductions are necessary.

  6. (A) is rerouted to 205 street

    (C) is extended to 207 street and runs to 2 Avenue

(D)Runs from 9 Avenue to Coney Island

    (E) is rerouted from W.4 Street along the (D) to Atlantic Avenue

    (F) is rerouted to Cranberry Street

    (G) is extended to Forest Hills

    (N)Operates in two sections

    1. Astoria Ditmars Boulevard to Atlantic Avenue

    2. Kings Hwy Brighton Line Station and 59 street 4 Avenue

    (Q) IS SUSPENDED

    (R) runs from 59-95 streets

    (S) extended to Newkirk Plaza

(N)(Q)(R) Trains can't operate along 60 street and Broadway. Only the Southern Tracks of the ManhattanBridge are passable

You should really check your proposals on a track map.

    And re:your question:

    (;) Suspended.

    (D) No trains south of West 4 St.

    (E) Trains run via the (F) south of West 4 St, terminating at Av X, Kings Hwy, 18 Av, and Church Av if necessary.

    (G) Trains run in two sections, split at Bedford-Nostrand. No trains south of Hoyt-Schermerhorn St.

    (J) Operates via the (Q) to Coney Island.

    (M) Operates via the (R) to 95 St.

    (N) No trains between Queensboro Plaza and Whitehall St.

    (Q) Suspended.

    (R) Suspended.

    NEXT

The 6 Av FasTrack workers have failed to finish in time and, as a result, the 6 Av Line is closed. Note that the 6 Av local tracks are open south of W4 St.

  7. (F) trains run via the (M) line between Manhattan and Queens.

    NEXT

    Queens Plaza station is impassable.

How would (E)(F)(M) trains fit in the 53 St tunnel?

    @Your scenario:

    (E) Trains run via 63 St and 6 Av Local.

    (M) No trains north of Broad St. Transfer at Delancey St for (F) service.

    (Q) No trains north of 57 St/7 Av.

    (R) Trains run to Astoria - Ditmars.

    NEXT

Because of a rail condition, only 10 tph can fit on the eastbound QBL express track.

  8. NEXT

Both stations named 34 St - Penn Station are impassable. Switches near said stations can be used, however.

I'll post the solution to this.

    (1) No service between 14 St and 96 St. Downtown trains run express from 137 St to 96 St.

    (2) No trains between 42 St and Chambers St. Uptown trains run local from 42 to 96 St.

    (3) Service suspended.

    (4) Trains run to New Lots Av.

    (A) No trains between 207 St and 14 St. Trains relay south of 34 St. Take the B for service to 207 St.

(:P Extended via the C to 168 St, then via the A to 207 St. Because of increased frequency, some southbound trains terminate at Kings Hwy. Brighton Beach-bound trains run local south of Kings Highway.

    (C) No trains between 168 St and Chambers St.

    (E) Runs via the (F) from Roosevelt Av to West 4 St.

    (M) No trains between Lex Av/53 St and Broad St.

(N)(Q)(R) Service increased. As a result, some (Q) trains terminate at 57 St.

    NEXT

57 St (F) impassable. No trains can be suspended and any trains running in two sections must have a direct transfer between sections.

    This is easy.

  9. Ok. Seriously, what exactly do you mean by that?

Well anyways, I'm doing it the logical way that the MTA might actually do if such a situation were to arise:

    (1) - No trains south of 42nd Street, Times Square

    (2) - Run via the (5) between the Bronx and Brooklyn

    (3) - No trains south of 42nd Street, Times Square - Runs local entire route

    (4) - Extended to New Lots Ave - Runs local east of Franklin Ave

    And umm, alternates are:

    - (C) train from 59th Street, Columbus Circle for access to the West Side

    - (Q) train from 42nd Street, Times Square to Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn to continue your trip

    - (R) train from 42nd Street, Times Square for lower Manhattan

    NEXT

The downtown platform at 42nd Street (A)(C)(E) is out of service and trains cannot pass through.

There are other alternatives, such as the (A) Park Pl - 59th (this assumes that the 2 runs to 14th or Chambers).

    @Your scenario:

    (A) Runs via the (D) from 59 St to 34 St, then via the (F) to West 4th.

    (C) No trains between 168 St and Chambers St.

    (E) No trains between Lex Av - 53 St and World Trade Center.

    (M) No trains between Whitehall St (trains to/from Queens Blvd) and Broad St (trains to/from the Jamaica line). Transfer at Canal St to continue your trip.

    NEXT

Both stations named 34 St - Penn Station are impassable. Switches near said stations can be used, however.

  10. (B) extended to 168 street

    (C) SUSPENDED

    (D)Normal

    (F) operates via 6 Avenue Express from W.4 street to 42 street

    (M) operates via 8 Avenue

    Next:

There is a bomb that exploded at Atlantic Avenue and Another on the Manny-B. Reroute all services with one shuttle bus running only.

I'll avoid the rather dumb one-shuttle-bus-serving-all-stations route and try to go without shuttle buses at all:

(;) Runs via the (F) line in both directions from 34 St to Church Av.

    (D) Runs local on CPW, then via the (F) line in both directions from 34 St to Coney Island, then via the (D) back up to 36 St.

    (F) No service south of Kings Highway - take the (D) instead. Selected southbound trains terminate at Church Av.

    (N) No trains between 34 St - Herald Sq and 36 St.

    (Q) No trains between 34 St - Herald Sq and Prospect Park.

    (R) Trains run in three sections:

......Between 71 / Continental Avenue and Whitehall St.

......Between 4 Av / 9 St and 36 St, Brooklyn every 8 minutes.

......Between 36 St and 95 St, Brooklyn.

    (2) No trains between Wall Street and Eastern Parkway - Brooklyn Museum. Runs local in Manhattan.

    (3) No trains between 14 St and Eastern Parkway - Brooklyn Museum.

    (4) No trains between Borough Hall and Utica Av.

    (5) No trains between Bowling Green and Flatbush Av.

    (A) Runs as much service as possible. Extra trains run between Euclid Av and 168 St. Runs local in Brooklyn.

    (C) Service suspended to reduce switching on the A.

    (G) No trains between Hoyt - Schermerhorn St and Church Av.

    NEXT

23 St and 7 Av is impassable. PROVIDE AS MUCH ALTERNATIVE SERVICE AS POSSIBLE.

  11. (F) trains run in 2 segments:

    - Between Queens and 42nd Street

    - Between Delancey Street and Brooklyn

    (J) trains terminate at Delancey Street

    NEXT

Due to a police investigation, the both of the (A)(C) two middle tracks at Canal Street out of service. How would you reroute service?

How would (F) trains terminate at 42nd without blocking the (B)(D)?

    @Your plan:

    (A) No trains between Chambers St and 34 St - Penn Sta. Some trains run via the (F) from Jay St to West 4 St.

    (C) Trains run in two sections, split at Chambers St/World Trade Center.

    (E) Some trains run via the (R) to Whitehall Street.

    NEXT

Due to a switch malfunction, all trains on the 6 Av Local tracks north of West 4 St are forced to operate via 8 Av.

  12. Ah, realism...

    (B) No trains between Kings Highway and Brighton Beach.

    (D) No trains between Bay 50 St and Coney Island.

    (E) No trains between Roosevelt Av and Jamaica Center. Some trains terminate at Queens Plaza.

    (F) No trains between Av X and Coney Island, and between 21 St - Queensbridge and Jamaica / 179 St.

    (J) Service increased between 111 St and Broad St. Trains from Jamaica Center run express between Broadway Junction and Marcy Av.

    (M) No trains between Myrtle Av and 71 Av. This allows for more J service.

    (N) No trains between 86 St / Gravesend and Coney Island.

    (Q) No trains between Brighton Beach and Coney Island.

    (R) No trains between Roosevelt Av and 71 Av. Limited service between Northern Bl and Roosevelt Av.

    (Z) Replaced by (J)

    NEXT

Due to various switch problems, trains on the 6 Av Local track at B'way - Laf can only operate via the Jamaica Line. In addition, trains on the Jamaica Line at Essex St can only continue via 6 Av Local.

  13. (Q) trains terminate at 57 St-7 Av.

    (N) trains have delays and wrong rail into Queens.

    (R) trains get re-routed via the (E) or (F) (whichever one is better).

    (Q) trains would get into the way of (R) trains. And how would (R) trains run via the (E)?

PS I don't know what an expert would say about this, but IMHO it's better to fully suspend service than run ridiculously limited service, especially to a place as busy as Astoria.

  14. Run the (5) via the (2) and decrease service on the (4)?

    NEXT

Due to emergency track work, the Queensbound (N)(Q)(R) tunnel is out of service.

Way for alternative service. And decreasing service on the (4)? Seriously?

    Your scenario:

No (N) trains between Lex - 59th and Queensboro Plaza.

No (Q) trains between Times Square - 42 St and Astoria - Ditmars.

    71 Av-bound (R) trains run via the (F) between 57 St - 7 Av and 36 St (Queens).

    NEXT

York St (F) is impassable. Challenge: provide as much alternative service as possible. Be creative.

  15. Why not this:

    (3) Extended to New Lots Av late nights.

    (4) No trains between 86 St and Bowling Green. Trains turn at Bowling Green by wrong railing on the South Ferry loop.

    (5) Trains run via the (2) from 149 St to Nevins St.

    (6) No trains south of 86 St.

    (:) Suspended to reduce switching.

    (D) Service increased to 25 tph. Some northbound trains terminate at Bedford Park Bl or Fordham Road. Some southbound trains terminate at 9 Av or Bay Parkway. To reduce switching, (A) trains run local on CPW. In addition, Bronx express service is suspended.

    (M) Service increased to 12 tph. Some northbound trains terminate at Queens Plaza.

    (N) Runs via tunnel, trains run at 15 tph. Some southbound trains terminate at 59 St.

    (Q) No trains north of 57 St / 7 Av. Trains run at 18 tph. Every other train runs express in Brooklyn to Brighton Beach.

    (R) Service slightly increased.

    Summary:

    (B) 0 tph

    (D) 25 tph

    (M) 12 tph

    (N) 15 tph

    (Q) 18 tph

    (R) 10 tph

    NEXT

A rail condition means that only 10 trains per hour can run via Lexington Avenue Express in each direction. Challenge: provide as much alternative service as possible.

  16. Honestly, such single track shuttles cause more problems than they solve. Instead of closing the subway line outright, providing only one train will cause unsafe overcrowding at the platform. In addition, an issue is that the shuttle doesn't go anywhere useful...
