The Two R179’s on the (A) are as they were before being taken out of service. The software delays are still present, and the AAS hasn’t been updated at all. And the R32’s did see service. YOU missed it.

Make that three, I just witnessed 3263-3272 heading to Far Rockaway.

No, an R32 did not see service today, only thing I missed was you being right.

EDIT: Make that FOUR! 3015-3019 is hooked up to another 32xx and also heading to Far Rock.

Nothing on the paper report of a second (A) train (yet) through AM of Monday, 5 October.  Three days ago.

Seems like the day after is when they threw the second set out. This morning around 6AM I happened to see two (both?) at the same time crossing by the wye. One of them was 3243-52, unsure what the other was and if there's still only two out.

    The 64 Re-testing R-179s as of October 5 were:

    3050-53, 3058-61, 3066-73, 3078-85, 3098-3121, 3126-29, 3134-45.

These were configured into 8, 8-car trains on (J)(Z) as projected.

One 10-car train (3248-57) has also been released on (A).

Two 8-car trains of R-32s were also on the (J)(Z) cycle (somewhere).

There is still no apparent status change for the R-32 fleet.

There's two 10-car R179s on the (A) since a few days ago (3238-47) and no R32s saw service today.

Sort of a random thought but has anyone else gotten pics / vids of an R160 passing over the hammel's eye connector? There's a train that deadheads from Far Rock to Rock Park passing over the wye at 6:35 PM and around 7:15 PM as well as one the other way in the AM usually directly behind the (S)huttle after the second (A) out (and another at an unknown time, possibly earlier). I've attempted many times however either only caught R46s or just missed an R160 passing by seconds (at least 5 times now ugh).

I don’t think they put any of the 10-car sets back in service yet

Hearing it's the 5-car sets that have more major issues as those were the later cars in the order and rushed through production as quick as possible. The R160s should stick on the (A) for a little bit.

Set of 32s not at Canarsie Yard anymore.

There's one set of R32s at ENY Upper level, I assume this will run during the PM rush in (Z) service.

That set ran in service this morning as a (J) along with two other sets on the (J) and one (Z) . That (Z) set deadheaded to Pitkin yard around 2 PM. There are currently two R32 sets in service on the (J) for midday and one laid up in the back of Parsons. No R32s are scheduled to run on the (Z) today for PM.

You can't go through from one end to the other on an R46 like you can on an R160/R179. The doors are locked, so unlocking them and then locking each set of doors would be incredibly time consuming.

Isn't there a feature that unlocks all of the storm doors from the cab immediately in case of an evacuation? (Unsure about re-locking, perhaps that's why it's not used)

I don't see the point of using the R68A on the (D) on weekends, the R68s assigned to the (D) are doing just fine, there isn't a drastic difference in comfort between the fleets and the (D) line R68s are reliable... so what's the point?

About a decade ago they did something like this where they put the (B) line R68A's on the (N) and (Q) on weekends cause the R160s warranty was about to expire after those cars traveled a certain amount of miles. So that the warranty would last longer, they used R68A in place of the R160s on weekends.

Just a thought, but since the B doesn't run on weekends, why not send some R68A's to the D line?

Funny that this was mentioned; two weekends ago I caught an R68A in regular D service.

This used to be a common thing to use 1-2, occasionally 3 sets from the B on weekends around 2011-2 I recall.

Well, whe you have trains that run 24/7 and your yard has no wash, it's bound to happen

Speaking of which, the (1)’s R62A’s are STILL FILTHY at the bonnets. It’s gotten so bad that the pantograph gates are BLACKENED. 🤦🏼‍♂️

I remember someone mentioning that the (1) Line's R62A fleet gets washed at 207 Street yard however that wash is designed for B-Division sized cars thus the brushes don't reach all the way to the sides & ends of the car.

(This is what I've observed being mentioned before. Open to clarification on this)

There’s many R46’s on the  again. Very few 160’s. Might have something to do with the R179’s being shifted around as they’re preparing to re-enter service in the near future.

There are still the same 10 or more sets in service especially rush hours, however middays usually see less (around 5 or more). Last weekend around 10-15 sets were in service, I would guess more sets were borrowed on weekends to service the R46s in the meantime.

The (F) will need their sets back very soon, sometime in the next week or two although there's no further word as of now exactly when.

It appears all of the R42s have been removed from ENY yard, only saw 32s and New Techs in the yard, end of an era...

There is still one pair signed as <Q> on the front, numbers unknown (whoever goes to the front of the Manhattan bound (L) platform there can see)

  11. So I witnessed another mention that the R179 cars have some parts supplied by WABTEC including the link part that separated taking them OOS. Any more details on this? This would be quite alarming if true considering that now they're replacing all of their older reliable diesel work units with... WABTEC built hybrid - electric diesels

    Add 3404/5, 3430/1, 3628/3669, and 3872/3 to ENY.

3404/5 was the lead pair on the set that ran the (R) one day in May 2014. Cool to see some notable pairs return such as 3380/1 with the R30 end and 3614/5 which was the lead of the last (A) trip they made. Edward G. Budd must be looking from above so proud.

Also 8 cars of R42s still sitting at FP. Guessing they're just dead storage waiting for their demise?

  13. A news anchor simply reposts the same exact statement about "being removed from service indefinitely" and suddenly it's fuel to the agreeably ridiculous thought of being permanently removed.

On the other hand, I've been hearing the Union does NOT want R32s in passenger service due to having to switch cabs and crews exposed to the public. Possibly they'll find a solution to this and eventually send them out.

  14. Stuff from the last few months. Kudos to the one who told me to use Flickr. Enjoy!

Just Your typical unrebuilt silverliner at Trenton. Oct 31 '19 (Fun Short Story - Decided to take my Mom on a trip to Philly on a whim and didn't realize it was Halloween until heading there. However as the day went on extreme wind gusts up to 60+ mph developed meaning only a handful of people were outside trick-or-treating. We never would have realized it was Halloween if we didn't check the date! We also caught the very last train going back to Trenton until sometime the next afternoon as the winds downed trees onto the tracks along the line.)

Because they've always had a schizophrenic approach to theses type of minor modifications.

In the late '80s, A Division cars going through GOH kept their original number plates, while the B Division cars had theirs replaced.  In the early '90s, some Redbirds had their old drop-sash windows replaced with small louvres, but some cars kept the old ones.  Same thing with rollsign cranks in the mid '90s- some cars had them replaced with hex keys, others kept the handcranks until well into the 2000s.  The small windows on certain cars- some R32s and R38s had the louvres screwed shut, others kept them usable.  The R62As had their small windows screwed shut in the early 2000s, while the R62s didn't get those adjusted until about a decade later.

Half-assed small fix-it projects that linger in purgatory for x amount of years are par for the course with this agency....

Seems to be a similar scenario currently with the R46 lighting, pole and sign destination upgrades. A bunch of random sets received the treatment with some leftover untouched. Same with the R62As. Guessing they're not touching the R62s with this upgrade either (?).

Did hear that some R46 sets have signage hardware that is too old to upgrade, wish there was an elaboration on this.

Edit: Also with the R160 sets that have seats removed at the end and the flip up seating. All of 11 trainsets were given the treatment and nothing since except those sets being randomly mixed with others. Although these modifications seemed to have a political influence involved (hence the "Cuomo scheme").

As well as with what were all of Coney's R160 sets at the time having the interior screens where the art cards are placed installed, including the "Cuomo" sets. None of the original Jamaica sets had these.

Some R143 sets received a door motor upgrade. Some.

Also anyone notice some of the "Overhauled at our Jamaica / Coney Island Shop" stickers with the check mark logos found at the end of the Cuomo sets have one yard on the exterior and the other inside?

  16. So I'm at the Pat Dolan trail (Willow lake reserve) and the South end borders the Jamaica train yard. As I'm at the end of the path where it meets Jamaica yard I see at least 4 firetrucks show up racing to the other side of the yard. Hope everything is alright.

I believe the path is open 24/7 and it's a great place to go during this time (open space full of nature and not many people go here. Just make sure to enter on the Park Drive (Van Wyck) side unless you're willing to go through a very muddy trail from the Grand Central Pkwy side.

I got a pic of the last R46 set while it was still in the yard, now if I knew of a free image service to upload and share here I would post it.

As I type this a 5th truck showed up. Yikes.

  17. Here's some videos of what would turn out to be the very final R32 (A) run as many of us know a memo was sent out mentioning that the R32 car class has been retired as of April 27. This R32 (A) was put into service around 9 AM on March 23, 2020 to / from Far Rockaway then ran to / from Lefferts for the rest of the day. This set was put into service on the (A) line to help out as the (C) line was suspended that morning due to someone in the crew room having covid-19.

Here's a few videos of that R32 (A) including Interior Footage, and it leaving Jay Street after being taken out of service due to an "unsanitary condition".

    Enjoy!
