m7zanr160s Posted February 19, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 19, 2010 What's the yellow 2x4-lookin' part of OTT's trucks made out of? I'm assuming it's made of something that doesn't conduct electricity, since that's where the 3rd rail shoe is mounted. Wood? Fiber-glass?... I believe it is wood.
St Louis Car 09 Posted February 19, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 19, 2010 I always thought that was an ugly look to the truck design.the early truck designers should have made an R160 type design. At least the R46 rockwell trucks went a different direction. metsfan Posted February 19, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 19, 2010 This was how 3rd rail shoes were done since the very beginning. The newer mounts are fiberglass i believe. - A
Joe Posted February 20, 2010 Share #5 Posted February 20, 2010 Sounds like you're talking about the shoe beams.
INDman Posted February 20, 2010 Share #6 Posted February 20, 2010 It's the shoe beam and it is made of wood. Only the ones on NTTs are fiber glass.
m7zanr160s Posted February 21, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted February 21, 2010 Interesting. Yeah, I had a closer look at them and was able to determine that they sure are wood.
R32 3838 Posted February 22, 2010 Share #8 Posted February 22, 2010 I Like the General Steel Trucks better than the NTT Trucks, Atleast the Old Trucks can last long, You have some subway cars with Older Trucks from 1959.
Art Vandelay Posted February 22, 2010 Share #9 Posted February 22, 2010 It is some kind of specially treated plywood. "Normal" wood hasn't been used since the R12s.
metsfan Posted February 22, 2010 Share #10 Posted February 22, 2010 PA1-4 cars, FL9 locomotives, DD1 locomotives, H&M "k" cars, and many, many other subway, locomotive & EMU equipment have the wood support beam. Some other have glass or some other non-conducting piece connecting the shoe to the current collection & ultimately the truck assemblies. - A
