Cops Charge Building Owner in Gas Bomb Attempt in Jersey City

Several Buildings Evacuated on Palisade Avenue

MYFOXNY.COM - Jersey City police have arrested a landlord with rigging a gas-bomb to try to blow up his own building and trying to blame it on his tenant. The explosion could have destroyed a neighborhood, fire officials said. Investigators found a gasoline can with an ignition device wired into it on Monday morning at 451 Palisade Avenue.

Milan Bolich Jr., 54, has been charged with attempted aggravated arson, risking widespread injury, and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, according to officials.

Police said they found a gas line turned on, which could have left to a larger explosion.

The bomb would have gone off had the front door been opened, police officials told the Associated Press.

"It was fortuitous that no one went into the front door," said Deputy Chief Peter Nalbach. "If they did probably that building and any building on either side of it and all the people in it would be memories by now."

The three-story building near Griffith Street was emitting a heavy gas odor at around 6 a.m. Several apartment buildings were evacuated a shortly after.

Jersey City Deputy Police Chief Peter Nalbach said that investigators were focusing on a man who once rented the ground-floor pizzeria where the crude bomb was found. Two suspects were being interviewed and arrests were likely, said Nalbach.

Police said the man who had rented the pizzeria may have had a legal dispute with the building's owner. Police said Bolich tried to blame the owner of the pizzeria.

Palisade Avenue was closed in both directions through the area while PSE&G crews shut off the gas line. Bomb squad members and arson investigators were called to the scene.

SkyFoxHD was over the area as firefighters safeguarded the building from the rooftop.

There were no reports of injuries.
