Taxi Catches Fire After Crossing LIRR Tracks

Syosset, NY (AP) -- Officials say a taxi crashed through a fence at a Long Island Rail Road station, rolled onto the live third rail and caught on fire. Train traffic was stopped for a couple of hours.

The taxi driver and a passenger in the car suffered minor injuries.

LIRR officials say the vehicle crashed through a fence at the Syosset station at about noon Sunday and drove onto the tracks. The flames were quickly extinguished.

Service between Hicksville and Huntington was restored after the taxi was removed.

Officials did not immediately know what caused the vehicle to crash through the fence.

I'm still trying to figure out how the heck that happens...and apparently the taxi caught fire just in front of a stopped train to boot.

I wonder if the brakes had failed on this car, because the gates would have been down...UNLESS the gates later came down and the train then stopped at its normal position but had its exit blocked.
