I would do the same thing, especially if I lived in Manhattan where the cost of living is 69 times higher than it is in any other part of the city. $54 would practically be bargain basement, for the purposes of the commuter in the article.

 

The fact of the matter is though that the NYC Subway covers more ground than PATH so that needs to be taken into account as to the fare difference between PATH and the MTA. For what it's worth, people do not know how much of a bargain they are getting with $2.25 as a lot of other smaller systems charge more for less ground covered.
