Guest MTA Bus Posted March 17, 2011 Share #1 Posted March 17, 2011 I have found a photo that proves that Queens Surface did run Orion 05.501 buses. http://www.ttmg.org/pages/dcbna/qsc-oriona.html Photo is from Trevor Logan
Joel Up Front Posted March 18, 2011 Share #2 Posted March 18, 2011 They also ran one that had a John Deere engine in it, right? The only active bus with a JD engine is LIB #1636. Seems not to pop up much, though I did see it at Hempstead on Monday.

nycbusfan Posted March 18, 2011 Share #5 Posted March 18, 2011 There were a few WMATA rejects that went to QSC and were later transferred to GBL.
The TransitMan Posted March 18, 2011 Share #6 Posted March 18, 2011 Orion 05.501 #700-705 from Queens Surface became #5545-5550 at Green Bus Lines, which are NOW #5982-5987 at MTA Bus.
The TransitMan Posted March 18, 2011 Share #7 Posted March 18, 2011 They also ran one that had a John Deere engine in it, right? The only active bus with a JD engine is LIB #1636. Seems not to pop up much, though I did see it at Hempstead on Monday. They had TWO Orion 05.501 CNG buses with John Deere Engines. Orion 05.501 CNG #404 and #437, which became #9835 and #9868 at MTA Bus.

The TransitMan Posted March 19, 2011 Share #9 Posted March 19, 2011 398 also.I've driven this JD and boy I was Impressed Orion 05.501 CNG #398 MUST have been repowered to a John Deere because Queens Surface got ONLY two (#404 and #437). They were the LAST two Orion 05.501 CNGs to be delivered to Queens Surface after receiving #396-403, #405-436, #438-499 (Local).
DevilBus65 Posted March 19, 2011 Share #10 Posted March 19, 2011 Drove all of them back in the day. Those Deeres had some pep and I think the diesel ones went to Tri Boro Coach for a while. I could be mistaken though. After all these years it gets blurry trying to keep track of the wheres and wherefores.

aemoreira81 Posted March 21, 2011 Share #13 Posted March 21, 2011 398 also.I've driven this JD and boy I was Impressed When was this bus (now 9829 at Gleason or West Farms) repowered back to a DD50G?
Joel Up Front Posted March 21, 2011 Share #14 Posted March 21, 2011 Pity those two are gone and the fate of 1636 is unknown. When Mangano's failure of a private system fails...
Green Lines 96 Posted June 14, 2011 Share #15 Posted June 14, 2011 Because Green Lines bought 5545-5550 ex-QSC Orion V 700-705 and 1143-1149 QSC TMC RTS 275-281 they got rid of 1001-1015 my favorite buses.
KNIGHTRIDER3:16 Posted June 14, 2011 Share #16 Posted June 14, 2011 Ok so 398 is at West Farms huh ,I've been seeing west farms giving back some of our joints so why not the JD powered one.I'm telling you that bus sounded so good that you forgot it was a Orion for a minute and even with the A/C on she would give you the Power and sound you wanted. As for 701 ...I heard about those and we should of kept them as well. Seems to me we had good buses just slip through our fingers.
