Trainspotter 0 Posted May 23, 2008 Share #1 Posted May 23, 2008 MTA bringing back double-decker buses? The double-decker bus is returning to New York's public transportation system, expected to travel its traditional route down Fifth Avenue. "Back to the future - at least in terms of productivity - is something we'd like to look at," Howard Roberts, NYC Transit president, said Thursday. The argument in favor of bringing back the double-deckers is that they require less maintenance than the long, articulated buses, which have a lot of moving parts at the "joint" in the middle of the bus. Double-deckers can carry up to 100 passengers, slightly more than the articulated buses, and they take up less road space than the long buses, said transit spokesman, Charles Seaton. trainfan22 2,234 Posted May 23, 2008 Share #2 Posted May 23, 2008 Finally the is MTA doing something smart. Bringing back the great ol double decker buses. Too bad they cant run them in the bronx for obvious reasons. And they should also bring back GM fishbowl buses and scrap the hybrids.
nycbusfan 2 Posted May 23, 2008 Share #3 Posted May 23, 2008 It would really be nice to see double deckers in service. I also wonder if they could work on streets that are too narrow for artics.

nycbusfan 2 Posted May 23, 2008 Share #5 Posted May 23, 2008 Routemasters? B) - Andy The buses would most likely be Alexander Dennis buses like the one below. They would have a closed top however.
East New York 4,104 Posted May 24, 2008 Share #6 Posted May 24, 2008 This would be a great site. I just hope the MTA factors in dwell time for the route.
metsfan 2 Posted May 24, 2008 Share #7 Posted May 24, 2008 I was thinking something along the lines of the ones photographed at the bottom: http://daviswiki.org/Double-Decker_Buses http://daviswiki.org/Double-Decker_Buses?action=Files&do=view&target=DD7.jpg - Andy
Pablo M 201 35 Posted May 24, 2008 Share #8 Posted May 24, 2008 Yup, looks the MTA really going for double decker buses this time around? Remember before when they talked about this and how quickly it died? Yeah, I think this time its no joke.
m106crosstown 0 Posted May 24, 2008 Share #9 Posted May 24, 2008 MTA used to have double-decker buses. Wow, I wander what route(s) they would be on.
metsfan 2 Posted May 24, 2008 Share #10 Posted May 24, 2008 I would guess they would go after the most problematic routes/stops first. I bet you could even focus them to stop at the most crowded stops in combination with the express routes. Would be cool to see them, whatever the case. - Andy
Pablo M 201 35 Posted May 24, 2008 Share #11 Posted May 24, 2008 MTA used to have double-decker buses. Wow, I wander what route(s) they would be on. 5th Avenue routes.
East New York 4,104 Posted May 24, 2008 Share #12 Posted May 24, 2008 5th Avenue routes. Back in the day, the routes 5, and the 15 used the double deckers. The 5 was renamed the M5 when MaBSTOA took over the Fifth Avenue Coach Co. The 15 was remaned the M32, then later the Q32, and the routes are still the same. Every blue moon they would be used on the Route 1, which was the 4th Avenue bus at the time. Now it would most likely only be the M5.
