Subway - What If?

That looks interesting. You said cannot terminate, not cannot pass, so here goes:

(A) No trains at 207 St - trains terminate at Dyckman St. Trains stop at 163 and 155 St.

(B) Rush hours and middays, trains run to Kingsbridge Road. Relay same way as (D).

(C) Suspended

(D) No trains between Kingsbridge Road and Norwood. Trains relay via Concourse Yard leads.

(E) Some trains extended to Lefferts Bl via (C). Other trains relay via single track north of Chambers St. To speed up service, a TO will board the end of the train at Canal St. In addition, trains skip 75 Av and Van Wyck Bl.

(F) No trains between Parsons Bl and 179 St.

(G) Trains extended to 169 St (F) and 18 Av (F).

(M) Trains terminate at Queens Plaza. To speed up service, a TO will board the end of the train at Queens Plaza.

(R) Trains extended to 169 St (F).

(B)(D) via 8 Avenue Local

(E) via 6 Avenue Express (switches to/from Express) at W.4 Street and 42 street

(F) select via 6 Avenue Express and Express on West End while others on Crosstown. Half of current F levels while run on 6 Avenue

(M) Every other train past Myrtle Avenue

(N)(Q) Service North of 42 street Suspended

(R) via 6 Avenue Local and select via Express

(S) Shuttle from Astoria to 57 street running

Because of emergency situation at Roosevelt Avenue, rerouted the (E)(F)(M)(R)

Also, the Montaugue street tube (northbound side) is flooded, rerouted the trains. No SERVICE AVAILABLE ON LOWER BROADWAY LINES AND CANNOT GO ON THE BRIDGE (S0UTH SIDE) OR 6 AVENUE. There is a way to get on te north side though.

How are you going to have the (B) terminating at 21 St-Queensbridge when the (F) and (R) trains are passing through?

First: how would the (D) get from southbound 8 Av to the Manhattan Bridge?

Second: how would the (B) terminate at 21 St, with 15 tph- (F) running through?

1. Did you not read it properly? I said the (D) would go southbound via the (A) & (F), it's not using the bridge...

2. The (B) would terminate on the 7th Avenue tracks using the switches there. Some (F) trains also use 53rd Street to alleviate crowding.

How would the (B)(D) go 8 Av to Manhattan Bridge? And WHY would you send the (E) express, if it has to be on the local at West 4 St and 42 St anyway?

What 7 Avenue tracks? At 21 St-Queensbridge?

And also, what woulds serve the southbound (D)?

OK...

Due to another washout, the Borough Hall station on the (2), (3), (4), & (5) is closed. (R) trains cannot stop, but they can pass through.

Retain the same amount of trains in Brooklyn, which is at least 20 TPH to New Lots Avenue and 20 to Flatbush, and maintain all 4 lines in Manhattan.

Okay, let me try to solve my own and yours.

Mine:

(B)(D) After 47/50 Sts, trains run via 63 St and then the (E) to Queens.

(C) Trains run express in Manhattan south of 145 St.

(E) Trains run between 205 St and World Trade Center, via local.

(F) Trains run via 53 St.

(J) Extended to 95 St, replacing the (R).

(N) Trains run via the (D) from Atlantic Av-Barclays to 47/50 Sts St, then via 63 St and the (M) to 71 Av.

(Q) No trains between Times Square-42 St and Astoria. Trains run via the tunnel.

(R) Suspended

Summary

B/D replace E in Queens.

E replaces B/D on CPW and in the Bronx

N replaces R on QBL

J replaces R in Brooklyn

=======================

Your puzzle now:

(2)(3) No trains between Wall St and Eastern Parkway.

(4)(5) No trains between Bowling Green and Nevins St. If 30tph can reverse at City Hall Loop, they can at Bowling Green.

=======================

NEXT

Washout. 6 Av is closed at 23 St, and, because of a police investigation, the 8 Av Express tracks are closed at 23 St. Other tracks not affected.

You can call me a foamer if you really want to...

(E) suspended

(B) 145 St/Bedford Park Blvd - 34 St - Herald Sq

(D) two sections; Coney Island - Whitehall St (R), 205 St - 34 St-Herald Sq

(F) runs via 8 Av/53 St

(M) Metropolitan Av - Essex St

(R) runs via 63 St, extended to Jamaica Center to replace (E)

(E) Runs via 6 Av and 63 St.

(F) Runs via Queens Bl local and Crosstown. Terminates at 71 Av.

(M) Runs via 63 St and QBL Express.

(R) Runs via 63 St and QBL Express.

Because of a situation at Queens Plaza, reroute the (E)(M). The express track cannot be used. The local track also is stuck on the Crosstown Line tracks. Reroute the (E)(M)(R)

(E) via the (F) between W 4th Street and Queens

(M) to Broad Street

(R) runs between 57th Street and Bay Ridge

How about just cutting the (M) back to Essex St, running the (E) local in Queens, and running the (A) local on CPW. CPW riders are going to see an (M) train and get so confused that they won't get on. Those people might not even know where the regular (M) train goes, let alone this weird "re-routed" (M).

For a long-term outage like the one suggested, they would get used to used to it. Also, those coming from Broadway Brooklyn still demand midtown, and the (M) is a 6th Avenue line there, so for this you have two sixth avenue line trains operating as the CPW local (except overnights). I'm also doing it this way because there is not enough room to terminate more than the (E) at Penn Station.

If people are confused by it, well, it's their own fault for failing to follow the oldest rule in the book, paying attention!

Oh, I misread your post. I thought you meant that the (M) would go from the QBL to the CPW line directly. Now, looking at the track map, I realize that this isn't possible, nor would it make any sense in the fist place. Please forgive my stupidity...

Because of a washout, the Broadway Line is out of service at 23 St. Note that you must have all three Broadway services reach Midtown, and all lines in the outer boros must maintain the same level of service. Since this is a long-term change, you may be liberal with service changes. Use 6 and 8 Av to their full potentials.

It's tricky to do this (especially with no track switches between Canal and 34th), but here goes:

(B) runs 24/7 during this situation.

(N) runs in two sections:

Ditmars Blvd, Astoria-34th Street, Manhattan

Stillwell Avenue, Coney Island-Prince Street (via bridge), Manhattan

(train terminates at Prince Street and is wrong-railed back to the Canal Street local station, where it then uses the switches and is wrong-railed back to Prince Street to begin service).

Late Nights: (N) from Brooklyn runs via tunnel and terminates at Canal Street

Most (Q) trains run Stillwell Avenue-14th Street via bridge at all times (using the same technique as the (N) other than late nights to turn).

Select (Q) trains run via tunnel and Nassau Street Line with no stops between Court Street, Brooklyn and Essex Street, Manhattan, using the turnaround, stopping twice at Essex and opening up what is the front half of the car in each case before and after making the turnaround. Those (Q) trains continue via 6th Avenue and CPW to 145th or 168th Street, Manhattan.

(R) runs all times during this as follows:

Weekdays in two sections:

71st-Continental to 34th Street, Manhattan

Canal Street, Manhattan-95th Street, Brooklyn

(Note: Some (R) trains during this are eight-car, 480' trains that operate via the Nassau Street Line, with those originating at Essex Street. Those trains swap-out cars with the (A)/© to deal with the restrictions of using 75' cars in the Eastern Division).

Weekends and overnights during this:

(R) uses eight-car, 480' trains (again, swapped with 60' cars from the (A)/© that can be used for this) and runs via the (F) from 36th Street-Broadway Lafayette, then via the (M) to Essex Street before using the turnaround at Essex to run via the Nassau Street Line and Montauge tunnel to 95th Street, Brooklyn.

(M) runs at all times (including weekends and overnights) during this, normal on weekdays, on weekends and overnights via the (E) from Queens Plaza-West 4th Street.

Local south of W.4th Street & north of 145th Street.

After 59th St, the next set of switches isn't until Canal St, so the (A) would have to run express the whole way to Canal St or run local. I know, people at Spring St lose out, but that's just how it is.

Once again, I think you're overcomplicating things. Even if this is a long-term service change, (Q) train riders will go crazy when they find their train suddenly at Essex St, then on 6 Av, and then on CPW. Besides, wouldn't the (J)(Z)(M) be held up while the (Q) turns around? I think it just makes more sense to have people get on a regular 6th Av train for 6th Av service. E.g., (F) at Jay St, (B) on the Brighton Line, (D) at many locations.
