Recorded Train Arrival Times @ 36th Street, Brooklyn...

Just a contribution.....

During the past days, I was hoping to stay in a station for at least three hours to record the earliness and lateness of the trains' schedule in a Sunday. So today I've recorded it at 36th Street station in Brooklyn where the southbound (D) , (N) and (R) train stops. This job was very tough because, there's a lot to write, no bathroom breaks, limit the amount of water or any drink you drink, no flat surface to write on (but the wall. I used my folder for a flat surface), and you're standing for a long period of time. Lets see what I've got.

I may have some errors on my math, but I hope I don't...

Using the MTA's calculation measures on your data, wait assessment results would be as follows:

Line | Standard | Minor | Medium | Major

(D) 70% | 15% | 15% | 0%

(N) 71% | 19% | 9.5% | 0%

(R) 68% | 18% | 14% | 0%

The MTA's official data for weekend wait assessment, rolling avg Sept 12-Aug 13

Line | Standard | Minor | Medium | Major

(D) 85.7% | 11.6% | 4.7% | 1.1%

(N) 82.7% | 9.7% | 4.4% | 1.3%

(R) 84.1% | 11.3% | 2.7% | 0.9%

Keep in mind that there (D) had the local run along CPW and took on the (4) load in the Bronx, not to mention the Brooklyn FASTRACK.

Looks like it's been a rough day for the (N)(R), perhaps they weren't able to recover the schedule.

Damn that's a lot of careful record keeping!

The only time I was able to always perfectly time my arrival to catch an (R) train was when I had to catch it at Herald Square at about 7:30 am. There was always the same train with the same Russian C/R with a distinctive voice who rolled in on time every day. It was comforting to have that regularity at that time in the morning.

It is. When the two trains arrive at the same time, I had to write so quick, take my phone out really quick to check time, and write down car numbers too.

The reason why I chose to record southbound trains is because trains are usually late.

I had a choice of two Ditmars Blvd bound (N) trains to take to school, that comes in 7:09am, or 7:15am. In neither train I still get to school at the same time since I transfer to the same Coney Island bound (D) train.

@Jsunflyguy: I was at 36th Street station at around 2pm-5:50pm. The last two service changes you put happened in the morning.

Yes but those trains will be out of position and probably running late for the rest of the day unless the MTA has a spare set (which I doubt) thus the incidents will knock on for the rest of the day.

Also the first message indicates that a problem at Atlantic was resolved at 6:20 meaning it was happening at some point earlier, perhaps while recording.

Thanks for your hard work.

Based on your data, the average waiting times for those 3 lines are:

D: 9.75 min   N: 10.19 min    R: 10.27 min

The differences are not significant, but during weekday rush hours, I always observed the N being late while the D being early.

D trains pop up back to back, with only a few people on the second trains.

The next delayed N train is then full of people and ends up skipping stops along the Sea Beach...

It will be interesting to conduct another measurement during weekday rush hours...

Nice, you helped me find the average waiting times...

I find during morning rush hours, mostly the S/B (D) trains are late and evening rush hours, it's mostly the S/B (N) trains are late.

I take the (D) train every morning, and it was very very crazy. My train comes in at around 7:19pm-7:28pm and at times it will make skip-stops. Almost every skip-stop I'm in (N) train, it's always during the evening rush. (Like around 5pm)
