Station Cleaner (Labor Class) Offer, From Conductor Exam 8094

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I took the conductor 8094 exam and I received a letter that the MTA has immediate vacancies for transit cleaners (labor class), and they are offering me the opportunity to be considered for this position.

I went in for pre-employment and did my drug test and an MRO marked my drug test as clear after I explained that I am on prescription medication for some anxiety. He said to expect a phone call for me to come in for a medical exam. It has been a week and a half since then and I have not heard back from the MTA for me to come in for a medical exam. Does anyone know how long it takes for the MTA to call to schedule a medical exam? Does anyone have any info on the status of hiring transit cleaners? They said they have immediate vacancies, when I got my letter, but I am wondering if they hired enough people and no longer have anymore openings, which is possibly why I did not hear back from them. Is there anyway to check the status of where the MTA is with hiring transit cleaners by list number?

Thanks,

SK

Typical call back times for medical are 1 to 3 weeks. And trust me they'll never not need to hire cleaners. Especially since winter is coming up and they need bodies for mandatory snow duty. Just give it another week and a half. If you don't hear anything by then, give them a call back and see what's going on.

I have a very high number. In the 10,000 range. I know my number for conductor will probably not get called by the time this list expires, but I would definitely take the cleaner job if it was offered to me. They said they have vacancies for cleaners, so I hope they call me for medical soon, since my pre employment and drug test are done, and the MRO said to expect a call for medical.

I would also take station cleaner. I am waiting for my medical for conductor but with the list going bad in February I don't know if they will call me in time.

Are people that are being offered station cleaner off of exam 8084 going to be offered this position after the list expires in February?

Good question. I would like to know that as well. They said they have immediate vacancies for transit cleaners, so I am surprised that I have not been called in for medical yet. Do they call or send a letter in the mail when to come in for medical? When I was there for pre employment, the people who were there for medical had letters with something yellow on the top of their letters.

I called them today and they told me they just hired 200 transit cleaners, but they also told me to keep calling every week to check if there are openings. My drug test is good for 90 days, so hopefully they call me in before then, if not I will do pre employment and drug test again. Not sure if they will still offer it after the current list expires, even though the list is for conductor.

I called them and they said that they reached my list number and that I don't need to call them anymore. They were surprised that I did not get a letter in the mail and then they told me to check my email. There have been no phone calls, emails or letters from the MTA since then. They told me to check my email ever since I went in for pre employement. Does anyone know why they told me not to call anymore? Do they send a letter at this point or an email? Did they tell me not to call anymore because they decided not to hire me?

It's been 5 weeks now since I went in for pre employment and drug testing. I still have not been contacted to come in and the last time I called them, they said that I don't have to call anymore. It seems like they are brushing me off and are just going to skip me.

Well your drug test is good for 90 days which is three months. Your five week wait unfortunately is not uncommon. Also Station Cleaners just finished picking jobs for the first 6 months of 2017, that also could hold up your process. At this point I'd give it another couple of weeks into the new year if you don't hear anything this year, and then give them a call back anyway. Especially with the list you're on expiring in February.

Does the MTA send an email saying if they are not going to hire people after pre employment?

I've never heard of TA sensing anyone emails for anything. I Ave always known them to make every other contact from pre-employment over the phone. But I've been working for them for 11 years so things may have changed. Also I'm not sure e what happens if they reject your employment. Maybe they'll send you a formal letter in the mail. I honestly don't know of too many people who've got rejected by them after a clean drug test. Unless you can't be cleared medically

I called many times before I was able to get through to anyone. They keep telling me different things. First they said that there was a hiring freeze on cleaners. Today they told me to once again check my email for something that may never come, which is really frustrating. They also told me that 300 people took the drug test, and to just keep checking my email and to keep calling. As the time approaches when this list expires, it seems that I won't be able to get this cleaner job with the mta. There is no order or process when your just a number on a list. They can easily skip over you without any warning and that's it.

Trying to be hopeful but after my last phone call with them, it's hard to be, given what they told me. Edited by ssk2486

Hopefully it works out in your favor. If not there's always other opportunities that open up in TA. A friend of mines applied for years with every MTA branch and title you can think of without any luck. After about five years of applying they finally got it. You just have to remain persistent.

I still have not heard anything. Every time I call I get a different answer. Apparently only person handles all of the cleaner jobs and I rarely am able to get her on the phone. When I do, she just says check your email and won't give an actual real answer. I heard that the list I am on expires on the 30th of January. Seems like I am out of luck.

Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately it's like this sometimes dealing with TA. Just keep applying for different titles. Something will come through.

I went in for my second drug test. Two weeks go by and I get a letter in the mail that says after reviewing your qualifications you were not appointed to the cleaner position. They did not interview me, see my resume or look at my 21 page booklet. They must be basing it on the application that I filled out while I was waiting. Are there actually qualifications that they look for just to be a cleaner? It's not hard, you can learn anything you need to know on the job. I am so disgusted with the MTA. Why have me come in a second time and do the entire process again for nothing? They already had the same application with my same experience from the first time I came in. What the heck is their problem?

TA doesn't do any interview when they hire you. As far as the qualifications go, I'm a bit puzzled on that, since I believe the qualifications are just needing a high scoop diploma for cleaner. But as I've previously stated, sometimes it's like this getting hired with TA. Just keep applying for any jobs you qualify for.

I found it a bit strange also. Like you, I thought the only thing needed to be a cleaner was a high school diploma, which I have and wrote down on the application they gave me when I went to Livingston street. Though they never asked to see my actual high school diploma, which I brought with me when I went down there both times. Perhaps I should have shown it to them, even though it was clearly stated on my application that I graduated high school, but no one at the desk asked for it. I thought there would have been a more formal sit down after I did my medical exam, but I did not even get the chance to come in for a medical. I am very surprised that they said I was not chosen to be appointed to the cleaner position based on their review of my qualifications, which could only be from the application that I filled out when I went there. Very strange and frustrating, unless they changed the qualifications that a cleaner needs to have, but I doubt it. It's a shame because I took this test for conductor in 2008, and I really was hoping for the opportunity to get in to the MTA as a cleaner, I really needed it, but no luck. As you said I need to keep trying.
