trainfan22 Posted April 14, 2022 Share #1 Posted April 14, 2022 NEWARK, NJ —The NJ TRANSIT Board of Directors today advanced the next step in the future NJ TRANSIT fare card as part of the Fare Modernization Program. In a continuing effort to improve the customer experience, NJ TRANSIT is taking steps to update its fare payment technology and offer additional payment options including the NJ TRANSIT fare card. This initiative is a goal of the NJ TRANSIT 2030 10-year strategic plan, which seeks to reduce cash and paper-based tickets while providing all customers with quick, easy, and convenient ways to pay. Today, the Board of Directors approved a contract to secure the required stock of cards which will become the NJ TRANSIT fare cards during a later phase of the modernization. trainfan22 Posted April 14, 2022 Author Share #2 Posted April 14, 2022 Surprised they are doing this after coming out with an app for fare payment. This farecard would have been clutch in the days before the app existed when it came to busfanning, as prior to the app, riding multiple NJT Bus routes in one day was very difficult due to the complex fare structure of NJT bus network.
BM5 via Woodhaven Posted April 14, 2022 Share #3 Posted April 14, 2022 CT Transit has done that with it's Go CT Card (which includes the zoned express buses), so good to see that NJ Transit is moving in this direction.

Not everyone will/can use the app.

Guess NJT is stuck in 1995, lol.

Their website (both desktop and mobile) looks very low budget compared to the MTA and NJT sites, trash app (which you can't use for fare payment). Septa Key being confusing for tourists, etc.

Future ENY OP Posted April 26, 2022 Share #10 Posted April 26, 2022 I hate POS with a passion. Their system is not antiquated like and WMATA.
pkim87 Posted June 21, 2022 Share #11 Posted June 21, 2022 What they should do is offer a discount for those who use a fare card (which can be integrated with the app) to encourage people to buy less paper tickets (and/or cash). This is implemented in BART and other systems. Otherwise there is no incentive. PATH did this of sorts when they rolled out their Smart Card albeit with a $5 fee for the card itself (trips on the card never expire so you could stock up on rides and if you registered your card, you could recover trips from a lost or stolen card once its reported).
