  1. I've seen weekend trains going into the city on the Babylon branch at like 10am or 11am and trains and night trains get pretty full def maybe a few of the drunk trains get SRO but that's like you said cramming into certain cars. I've seen this on eastbound peak and off peak trains everyone crowds in the cars by the stairs at Pen Station instead of walking down, I'm surprised how empty other cars are and everyone sandwiches themselves into a couple of cars.
  2. Everyone assumes everyone goes to work or school M-F 8-4 or 9-5, and wouldn't want to go into the city on weekends. I was just talking to someone about this a few minutes ago, because the news casters always assumes everyone works M-F and has the weekends off. "It's going to be nice for your weekend, with a chance of a shower for your commute back to work on Monday morning." Oh and everyone has a 3 day weekend on federal holidays such as Columbus Day!... Really? On a side note I've seen weekend trains on the Babylon Branch just as packed as peak M-F "commuter" trains....
  3. I saw on the news that people on SNAP/"food stamps" in Nassau/Suffolk has- almost doubled with the "great recession" which made me wonder if people having to rely on the bus increased... ...this made me wonder about the social stigma of food stamps of and taking the bus... This also made me wonder if given the choice would people on Long Island rather take the bus or pay with food stamps at the grocery store, if they had to make a choice in a rough situation... That is a survey I would love to know the results of, especially on Long Island!
  4. It's more of a not in my back yard thing, not the roads... Look at how some of the roads buses like the n79 take, heck look at some of the roads Suffolk and Huntington take in northport. On the north shore it is more a "rural setting" but that doesn't mean there should be no buses because no bus service would exist anywhere on the north shore (HART, NICE, or SCT).
  5. When you move to Long Island you will see how some people, especially from certain parts of the Island (and different social classes) view the LIRR V. Public transit. Sure you can explain it, but I won't take out of discovering it. lol "The LIRR is simply not public transportation darling, it's the LIRR darling, we're not those poor people who take the bus. Are we still on for tennis this week? Your country club or mine? We can meet at the RR station. Say should we take my benz or your land rover?" lol I love the "Long Island House Wife," It's such a challenging career, seriously you see these people walking around whatever community you live in wiyj such an attitude (and all they really did with their life is marry someone with a good salary), or driving their soccer mom combat machine (aka mini van or suv) that is too large for them that they cannot control. be warned, if you see them in a parking and you are going in opposite directions they automatically have the right of way to cut in front of to get the parking spot they want. Then you see them in the store talking to other Long Island House Wives in any given store you go to and they all make being a housewife, dropping the kids off at school, or soccer, shopping, registering little susy for dance class etc. seem like the most challenging job in the world. lol ...and Joel Up Front is right, nothing better disturb there piece of heaven, keep in mind whatever area these people live in is the best if the live on the north shore they look down on the south shore if they live on the north shore "they can't afford a place on the ocean in Nassau County (south shore)..." If you live in Babylon you look down on Huntington, if you live in Huntington and people live in Babylon, well you have a good laugh about it with your neighbors in Huntington... If you live in Southern Nassau County and someone says they just bought place in Massapequa someone would say to you "...not East Massapequa, right?! Because your kids will go to the Amityville School District." If you told them you lived in Amity Harbor (nice area) or East Massapequa but were planning on sending your kids to private school, or didn't even have kids people would still look down at you because you are in the Amityville School District. lol It really is hilarious...
  6. Nah, it would be nice if getting my masters there but in retrospect I probably wouldn't have time with school and work to fit that in on the side. According to seethroughNY Stony Brook bus drivers make about $68,000, not too bad, is hound still looking for a job? lol
  7. Yea, I just don't understand what is up with these small ass companies. lol I could make a lot more money doing school and field trips if I bought a bus, that is if anyone hired me for those trips. lol I don't have the time or the energy for that though...
  8. Does the company know he's dropping off his kids first? The company I worked for (Nassau County, LI) the driver had to p/u the students in the order the district gave but could drop them off in any order they wanted, usually it would work in reverse of the morning but sometimes the driver would alter the PM route to get done closer to the next school... Is there a way to get or subcontract any routes if you have one or two buses? I'm really interested in getting started with one or two buses, I see mini van's all over the city with names of companies I've never heard of before, like I saw 168th st transportation (or something like that), these companies can't be that big can they?
  9. Do you go to school at Stony Brook? I'm thinking about getting my masters there and wondering about their bus system, I'd love to drive a bus for them part time just so I could drive a bus while I'm getting my masters. I know I have seen job postings for bus driver at Stony Brook for bus driver, I'm wondering if they also hire students to drive thier buses as many other colleges/universities allow their students to drive for the the university bus system. I think it would be unfair if this was only civil service and the students weren't allowed to drive part time, don't you think?
  10. Yea and these signs are HUGE! I agree about raising money but you have to understand the average narrow minded home owner in bot Nassau and Suffolk... "Not in my back yard" AND "I have my piece of the pie now (home ownership, car, job) and now that I have it, NOTHING should raise my taxes." Nassau and Suffolk are insane, almost as insane as the people I see on the news who chose to live in the city but are on the news complaining about anything that makes noise, or bitching about anything because it will cause traffic and/or noise on their street... Uh, why'd you choose to live in MANHATTAN if you don't like traffic, noise, or foot traffic genius?
  11. I have seen they have attached a laminated flyer about the n4x at the stops I have seen, I think it has the stops but am not sure.if it has the stops. These signs have a QR code that can be scanned with their smart phone, has anyone scanned this code? I'm curious as to what it gives you, schedule, nice website, basic n4x info? Do they have enough dispatcher to take away from their normal duties to do this? Also, this would cost a lot of money, dispatchers make a lot of money and if this is extra work add time and a half, we're talking about a lot of money to funnel people onto the n4x. What about NICE's student information ambassadors that they had/have at NICE? Offer them minimum wage (I'm sure college kids would love some extra pocket money) on their days off to be sent to the major stops to talk to passengers waiting about the n4x, give them a schedule, tell them what stops the n4x stops at, etc. I think that is a great idea (if I do say so myself lol) because just riding the n4 to Jamaica and back to Freeport later in the day I noticed a lot of riders who may not be computer/internet users (the elderly, mentally/physically disabled) asking the drivers and they were (how to put this nicely) less than informative. I think the problem right now is that connections are not lining up as it should with other connections, from what I've heard (talking to people in line at Freeport and Jamaica) is that n4x drivers are taking xpress to mean drive as fast as you can, yea the bus is getting to Freeport or Jamaica earlier but leaving behind people who are are scheduled to connect from other buses onto the n4x and want to take the n4x, but the bus is gone way before it is scheduled, leaving them to take the next bus which would be a n4...
  12. I missed the last morning n4x yesterday and took a regular n4 to Jamaica... The n4x buses passing us (going to freeport) were empty (at one time 2 n4's back to back with a packed n4 picking up the work a few minutes behind them) while the n4's were packed... Either it has some kinks or people don't understand it. I've noticed people get on the n4 at xpress stops and get off at xpress stops so either these people don't understand the n4x, the timing is bad on the n4x, or its not meeting up with the passengers getting off other buses, making them miss the n4x and forcing them on the n4.
  13. That def would stop them! However, (as I understand it) the State or County Cannot seize a car with a lien on it . The problem I have with that is it creates a 2 sets of standards for those who own their car out right and those who owe a bank (or whoever) or lease a vehicle. I think that it is wrong that two people could commit the same crime but one person is punished harsher because he/she owns their car out right, justice is supposed to be equal.
  14. I was speaking in general about distracted drivers, not necessarily about the driver who rear ended the bus. I see a majority of distracted drivers who are texting... Texting might be one of the most dangerous things a driver can do, especially younger drivers who are already inexperienced operating their vehicle as it is.
  15. Who cares if the buses are crowded that is not an excuse to keep dangerous drivers on the road, they should be on the bus where they belong. Maybe if they cracked down, more people would lose their license, more people would have to take the bus, ridership would go up, and NICE would get more funding. The sad part is, rich or poor I think a lot of people would continue to operate their car without a license. Something needs to be done, Long Island has to the largest amount of idiots who can't think, who speed, who don't look! I swear it is amazing how many people people I see cut in front of me or others without looking. I honestly don't know if they are too stupid to look or think the world revolves around them and everyone must give them the right of way so they free to pay attention to their phone and the radio....
  16. Seriously! The only ones who would have a problem with it are the idiots... lol If you are doing something so wrong that your rear a stationary object you don't deserve a license, IMHO.
  17. Or someone texting... Alcohol and speed seems to be the cause of many spectacular accidents on the Island over the past couple of years. No matter how it happened it is time to start revoking licenses on the grounds of the person being an idiots.
  18. This bus was stopped at a red light and a car slams right into... Honest to god how does this keep happening? Long Island has to have the worst drivers, how in the world is someone so distracted they don't see a big orange bus stopped at a light?
  19. Again?! Car Crashes into NICE Bus Stopped at Traffic LightPosted by Steven Nicastro (Editor) , August 25, 2013 at 12:28 PM The driver of a Lexus lost control of their car and smashed into the back of a Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE) bus stopped at a traffic light in Levittown Saturday at 11:32 p.m. The driver of the car suffered minor injuries in the accident, which occurred at the intersection of Newbridge and Flamingo Road. No one on the bus was injured, according to police. Levittown-Wantagh Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Nassau County Police responded to the accident
  20. So you teach members not to shoot their mouth off by shooting your mouth off? lol Honest to god lighten up... He apologized, no need to rip him a new a-hole afterward... Just a friendly post, let's all move along and get back on topic...
  21. I asked if anyone was planning on taking the first n4x, it was me... I'm still deciding if I'm going to take the n4x Tuesday or the LIRR, probably the LIRR.
