  1. Someone forgot to measure tunnel clearances properly during the reconstruction. And MTA management, in their usual inertia, have simply been uninterested in doing anything about it.
  2. I used to make a big deal about platform length on the Eastern Division, then I realized the bigger problem is the lines themselves. The Canarsie line between Broadway Junction and Bedford Ave is a case in point of a tunnel that really should have been cut through the street grid instead of following it. Those 90-degree turns in Bushwick and East Williamsburg don't do the any favors. Same can be said of the Jamaica Line between Broadway Junction and Cypress Hills; I'm surprised the BRT didn't use the Dual Contracts as an opportunity to realign the route onto Jamaica Avenue as a 3 track el- real missed opportunity right there.
  3. All this 4 and 5-car set math NYCT has to factor into orders now reminds of how much better married pairs were for operational flexibility.
  4. The GE cars were oddballs, but they were definitely interesting with their 115 hp motors, original bulkheads, and small numberplates. The interior lighting sucked, though- very dim backlit ads just like the R62/As and rebuilt R38s.
  5. It reminds me of how the contractors screwed up Montague with the clearance issue, and the MTA never even tried to fix the problem; people will continue making the argument "oh well the R32s and R42s are on their way out anyway", but that doesn't make it right. Something was botched, and is being left as-is without being corrected. It's a slippery slope; in a sense, that type of thinking is what brought about the transit system's hell years. The corner-cutting and deferred maintenance of the '60s became the graffiti and derailments of the '70s. We can't afford to go back there, but the Authority's managerial complacency could certainly end up pushing things in that direction.
  6. He should have never interfered with the original plan in the first place; was always skeptical of the revisions he imposed on that project....
  7. The rumor from January said they'd be gone by April, and what a surprise, they're gone. I guess Junior Cuomo got what he wanted; talk about a man obsessed with appearances and PR as opposed to real issues. If service rebounds and car shortages appear due to a low spare factor, you'll know exactly who to thank folks...
  8. They still haven't fixed the Montague clearance issue? Is there a source for that information? They really should have fixed this trivial clearance issue by now.
  9. Theoretically, the Nassau line could be connected to Grand St through the old bridge tracks north of Chambers, but to avoid merging issues one would probably have to curtail the to Canal Street (which actually used to be a terminal station in the '90s, until they redid the track layout). But even so, the Nassau Street line has outlived it's usefulness- it duplicates the Lower Manhattan portion of the Lexington line and is too far away from the riverfront to be of any use to the residents there. The best thing (in a perfect word which doesn't exist, of course) would be if the replaced it with a new alignment heading north from Montague, up Water/Pearl/SaintJames, and tying in to the Chrystie Line. Assuming it would be 4 tracks, could probably solve several problems at once. While I still admire the sheer extensiveness of New York's subway/el system after all these years, lately it's become harder for me to ignore the flawed layouts in some parts; best examples are Lower Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn- seemed normal when I was a kid, but now I realize they're both complete clusterf**ks when it comes to planning.
  10. Well, I don't know about that. Sanders came across as a lot more genuine. @BM5 via Woodhaven: Agreed about independent voters; we didn't like the choices presented in 2016 and we won't like them in 2020, either. Personally, it was clear to me both then and now that the DNC worked behind the scenes to prevent Sanders from securing the nomination. You can thank them for Trump- they brought him to power just as much as the folks in Redneckistan did.
  11. My personal favorite was the 75 Butler-Newark. Odd route and usually empty bus, but definitely an interesting ride.
  12. Never mind, I've figured it out.
  13. Perhaps a prototype sign from 1971? The location also looks unfamiliar- the car plant in St. Louis, MO possibly?
  14. I used the and the in the Bronx for over a decade. The amount of battery runs that occur on both those lines during rush hour because of delays indicates the current pattern is not working. Not saying there should be another or a , but am definitely saying that the present state of affairs needs to change because it f**king sucks.
  15. Agreed; hearing people repeat that phrase ad nauseum has actually been making me less receptive to their ideas, to be honest... LOL just brought back memories of when they were trying to up the standards for taxis in the '90s- trivial shit like "a cab can't be more than 5 years old" and such. As if a taxi being 6 years or older was such a travesty, SMH.... I remember a bunch of late '80s Chevy Caprice taxis still being on the road around 2000; they were pretty solid and the fare was cheap. The West Bronx might have the and the /, but the current setup there isn't too great. Jerome is too close to the Grand Concourse and too far from University Avenue, and the Concourse line isn't as useful as it could be without a 4th track. The is definitely too slow (too many stops) north of 96th; blame that on no 3rd track between Dyckman-145th as well as no express stations on the 3-track portions (must've been the same genius who put Burnside as the only express stop north of 149th on the ). Not saying it will get fixed anytime soon- just saying the current setup sucks. And the East Bronx should probably not count on getting anything in this century; the TA is in no hurry to build them a B-Division-sized line, at all.
  16. But would having trains go between the Brighton Line and Montague Street Tunnel be really worth it? Aside from occasional G.Os that usually carried air, no regular service has been operated that way since the stopped running on Brighton in 1986. Theoretically, you could send the service up Broadway instead of Nassau, but even then, that would require the to got through the tunnel instead of over the bridge, or require the to serve Brighton instead of Fourth Ave. Is there even a demand along Brighton for service to Lower Manhattan?
  17. Completely irrelevant considering the main topic was a derailment on the .
  18. I have some basic ideas I've expressed about public transportation in New Jersey; but nothing too specific- they're in the NJT section:
  19. Got it Got it and found the direct link, thanks.
  20. That's exactly what I was looking for- how were you able to locate the direct link?
  21. Well now that I figured it out, I'll try this again. Here goes: This here shows the effects of the acid baths on the carbon steel cars back in the day-- all that brown is rust. By the early '80s a lot of R17s and some other IRT cars looked like they were disintegrating. Some folks on these boards complain about paper rollsigns on the trains today, but hey, a lot of trains didn't have any signs at all in the '70s and '80s... There were definitely R42s with blue doors pre-overhaul, and there were probably some R40 and R40Ms with blue doors, but green doors were definitely an anomaly. I know I've seen another picture somewhere of a set of R40s that actually had doors painted a darker green for some bizarre reason from around the same time period, but I haven't been able to locate it again. Either way, good to see some new photos shedding light on the nuances from the TA's old days. Again, as stated above, the photos are not mine; posted here for discussion/thread purposes only.
  22. Got it, just tried it myself- the image through hosting is showing up without any problems, works good. Thanks. Yeah, any time I tried the "Insert Image from URL" button, things never went through. And whenever I tried putting in an image directly from nycsubway.org or any other site, it would just show up like: For now, I'll just stick with using image-hosting places as a proxy. Still trying to wrap my head around some things since the last site update here on NYCTF, but I'll figure it out eventually. Been using computers since the turn of the millenium, but trying to keep up with technology I sometimes feel like CJ trying to follow the damn train 😆
  23. Yeah, I could've sworn it embedded fine before the last site update, but anyway, I tried imgbb.com and no dice- it either shows up as a link or the field turns red and it won't go through when I paste into "Insert Image from URL" here on NYCTF: https://ibb.co/VMxfB18 The weird thing is videos embed just fine when I Insert the link for those. I've been dealing with the photo-linking problem for a while now, though. Greatly appreciate any help.
  24. Agreed. All the light rail shitposting is giving me a headache.
  25. It doesn't, and when I tried adding that and even the [/IMG] code, it didn't work. Yeah, I have the opposite problem basically LOL...
