R77E locos to be upgraded to R257s and new R255s
R10 2952 replied to Union Tpke's topic in New York City Subway
R34255? The contract numbers inflation is really getting out of hand... I also wonder if these things will be as trouble-prone as the R156. -
Nah man, there's enough problems on these boards as it is... fake-accounters, necroposters, trolls, a site hack 9 years ago... last thing this place needs is bots thrown into the mix, LOL.

New Jersey Transit - Random Thoughts Thread
R10 2952 replied to Orion VII 4 Life's topic in New Jersey Transit
Been reading about some of the bus routes that NJT contracts out to private operators- the Academy lines to/from Wall Street via Holland Tunnel. Got me thinking; there's a terminal at the NY end of GWB, a terminal at the NY end of Lincoln Tunnel... any case to be made for a small/medium bus terminal for NJT somewhere on the west side of Lower Manhattan? -
For all we know, that account might be a bot or something...

Thank you for backing me up, although I will offer the caveat that I don't see Cuomo as a leader worth much praise to begin with. Granted, he's got more sense than certain idiot Republicans (Paul LePage, Sam Brownback, Brian Kemp), but at the end of the day, Cuomo's a two-faced corporatist Democrat who gives jack shit about ordinary working people. He's part of the problem, not the solution. We need a lot more Bernie Sanders in government, and a lot less Andy Cuomos.
-
So just because Trump is exponentially bad, we should ignore all the shit that Cuomo has pulled in his decade as governor? Are we supposed to what, hold one guy accountable and just let the other off the hook, no questions asked? They both need to go, for different reasons maybe, but they still need to be voted out at the end of he day.

SUBWAY - Random Thoughts Topic

Found another picture of R40/42s with green doors, what I mentioned a while earlier: Line: BMT Brighton Line Location: West 8th Street Route: D Car: R-42 (St. Louis, 1969-1970) 4728 Photo by: Doug Grotjahn Collection of: Joe Testagrose Date: 7/26/1981 Seems like this was a pattern at CIY for a time; paint shortage I guess? -
Coronavirus IX: Evictions- Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)
R10 2952 replied to R10 2952's topic in Off Topic Lounge
Personally, with joblessness and evictions being what they are currently, we're in for an economic slump that's going to last twice as long as the last one, at least. And who's going to bear the brunt of all this? Ordinary working folks- as usual, sadly. -
Department of Subways - Proposals/Ideas
R10 2952 replied to EE Broadway Local's topic in New York City Subway
Well if the MTA's going to make cuts, then the path of least resistance would be to start off with eliminating special runs and put-ins. trains to/from 137th, s at 179th, etc. Personally, I'd like to see them get rid of all the confusion on BMT Broadway- just cut all the superfluous trips to 96th, beef up service and call it a damn day. Why make things complicated when they can be so simple? -
SUBWAY - Random Thoughts Topic
R10 2952 replied to EE Broadway Local's topic in New York City Subway
This was right around or after GOH; was still trying to figure things out. It took a while for them to replace/standardize logos/decals on all the different fleets going through the program. For example, there's another picture on nycsubway.org of a freshly-overhauled R42 still carrying the old-style car numbers. Of course, they all got replaced after a few years (early '90s I think). Interesting how the R38s carried the old plates until the end, though... -
I gotta agree with MHV here; if people are only doing it "for the pension" and can't be bothered to learn reasonably important mechanical distinctions between car classes, then hey, maybe this is not the right line of work for them. An emergency could happen and then what? Either that or management should do better training. Not saying that TA employees should all be buffs/nutjobs, just saying there should be a reasonable middle ground, is all.

First woman to run NYC subways is leaving MTA
R10 2952 replied to +Young+'s topic in New York City Subway
I'm no fan of the monetary shenanigans that go on in the private sector, but that doesn't mean the public and non-profit sectors should be exempt from criticism. If the public sector wants more respect and less anger directed at it, then they need to set the right example themselves. I've worked in the public sector and the amount of waste, inefficiency and non-transparency is mind numbing. There's a website I came across a few years ago similar to what QM1 mentioned, it showed the highest pensions being paid out/collected from the New York State Retirement System- #1 or 2 on the list was a retired executive from the New York Public Library, collecting over $200k annually in pension money... like HTF do you earn that kind of money working for the library? Something ain't right. -
Actually, having an option out to Newark Airport would be a good thing to be honest. Lot of people in New York have started using EWR instead of JFK for international flights, for example. I stopped using JFK 6 years ago after coming back from abroad and having to wait 3 hrs 30 mins to get through Customs... and I'm a US citizen for f**k's sake... Kennedy Airport has devolved into a Fourth World nightmare at this point.

Overnight Essential Bus Service Plan
R10 2952 replied to checkmatechamp13's topic in New York City Bus
The reason it's at 231st/Kingsbridge is because that's where the diverging point for all three routes (Bx7/10/20) is. Granted, if they realigned the routes and reduced driver change times to be more efficient, it would be less aggravating. But the fact that the 7, 10, 20 all went through the Bronx Bus Redesign process with little to no meaningful changes whatsoever, told me all I needed to know about how the MTA intends to go about these things. They don't give a shit, and it shows. -
I remember in the 2010 cuts the MTA tried to axe the Bx20- the community in Kingsbridge and Spuyten Duyvil pushed back hard, but ended up reducing the line to a 2-3 hour window for rush hours, 4-5 trips in each direction. With another round of cuts looming not far off on the horizon, I wouldn't be surprised if the agency tries to cut it entirely now. Tactics straight out of their usual playbook- reduce a route's appeal by marginalizing service to the point of making it as unattractive an option as possible, then cutting it because of "low ridership".

Definitely had something to do with the R42 platform boards; which begs the question of why the R40/42s ever ran on the Eastern Division in the first place. Would've been easier to have it R32/38 after GOH- unsolved mysteries I guess.
-
That's consistent from what I used to hear from people who lived around Central Park Avenue up there, more or less. Hence the point I made earlier about only 4 people on my bus being a mystery LOL... @B35 via Church@Cait Sith If I ever do get around to upgrading my sig, it most def ain't gonna be one from some '80s, quasi-detective, late-night TV roadkill 😆😆
