NEW YORK (AP/1010 WINS) -- "The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is soaking up the sun.

It came out -- for a while -- on Thursday as the MTA and New York Power Authority showed off 48 solar panels at a Brooklyn subway facility.

The panels heat water for employee restrooms at the Coney Island maintenance shop. The water also is used to wash parts of subway cars.

The effort is designed to cut costs and greenhouse gas emissions."

Looks like the (MTA) is starting to get with the times. Hopefully this reduces maintenance costs, not that 50 panels will provide anywhere near enough power for the yard, but its a start.

Finally, I know there are plans for a Solar facility on top of the Coney Island Terminal since it is built, now it shows up and is just in time for the summer season, great job (MTA),!

The solar panals have been at Stillwell since it opened....
