"An international search for suspicious packages intercepted two explosive devices bound for Jewish houses of worship in Chicago - and prompted terror scares much closer to home.

President Obama deemed the packages a "credible terrorist threat against our country" and vowed that the United States' enemies would not prevail.

"The American people should know, that the counter-terrorism professionals are taking this threat very seriously and are taking all necessary and prudent steps to ensure our security," Obama said.

The devices - one found in the United Kingdom, the other in Dubai - originated from Yemen, a growing hotbed for terror groups including a dangerous al Qaeda offshoot, officials said.

"This was not a dry run," said one law enforcement source. "There were explosives in the devices and they were to be sent to Chicago."

The scare also prompted authorities to evacuate several downtown Brooklyn office buildings, search cargo planes in Philadelphia and Newark and dispatch fighter jets to escort a flight from the United Arab Emirates to Kennedy Airport.

A package inside a UPS truck at MetroTech - which was later found to be an envelope from Yemen - temporarily shut down the Manhattan Bridge and part of Flatbush Ave. on Friday.

The threatening item in Brooklyn was cleared just before noon. An NYPD X-ray of the envelope revealed that it simply contained bank receipts.

"That package has been scanned by our bomb squad and been cleared," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.

Authorities said that Yemen, where Christmas Day underwear bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab trained, appeared to be the common link among the suspicious packages.

President Obama learned Thursday night of the initial threat in the UK.

"We know that al Qaeda in the Arabian peninsula, the terrorist group based in Yemen, continues to target our homeland, our citizens and our friends and allies," Obama said.

The synagogue across from Obama's Chicago house was not one of the houses of worship targeted, officials said.

As police helicopters thundered in the skies above downtown Brooklyn, scores of NYPD, FBI and FDNY vehicles encircled the loading dock at 4 MetroTech, moving back terrified workers and passersby.

Investigators initially thought the package was on a UPS truck was in Long Island City, law enforcement sources said. Cops surrounded one cargo vehicle but later learned the package was on a truck that left Queens for Brooklyn."

The Nightly News said it was a dry run. The Explosives were not active, nor were they a threat. I don't know if this was before or after the Daily News article or not. All packages coming from Yemen were tracked, and an Emirates jetliner was escorted into JFK by fighter jets this evening because it contained cargo from Yemen.

Can't give details, but i can say that the atmosphere with TSA and DHS is getting very tense recently. They just changed screening tactics (as you may have read or heard about in the news), and some other changes are soon to come.

Think about this: busiest travel days of the year are rapidly approaching, and next year marks the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

While the TSA has prevented hundreds of isolated incidents in the past year or 2, they have also been keenly aware of the continued threat of terroristical plots.

As side note, any one of these TSO's and airport/customs police would give their life to prevent another 9/11 from happening. They risk their lives every day so that you, our friends, family, etc can travel in relative confidence of being safe. Keep that in mind before you give them a hard time.

The 'escort' to JFK was not in that article from yesterday's Daily News.

The Cable News channels and the local NYC tv stations broke into regular programming for most of yesterday afternoon.(10/29/10)

However places of worships across the US including those with the Jewish faith has seen increased police patrol.
