Andrew Cuomo will have a great deal of power to improve subway, bus and commuter service, as well as to hold the line on fares. Riders really need his leadership after three years of fare hikes and the worst service cuts in memory. Decent transit service is key to the quality of life for literally millions downstate, as well as critical to the region's economic recovery. New York is unimaginable without transit to move huge numbers of workers, customers, tourists, students and others. Cuomo will need to turn around transit's current grim outlook. He will need to make some key changes, such as ensuring improved oversight. And he will need to continue what's working.
