Mayor Bloomberg wants surveillance cameras to bust cars in bus lanes

ALBANY - After losing its congestion pricing fight, the Bloomberg administration wants a law to create a network of cameras to catch cars illegally using special bus lanes.

Much like red-light cameras that photograph motorists who drive through traffic lights, the new devices would be installed on up to 50 miles of lanes designated as part of a pilot program across the city for rapid transit buses.

The idea is to keep the lanes open so the buses can move more quickly, city officials said.

A second bill has been introduced that would greatly expand the number of agents who can ticket motorists for blocking intersections.

"We're still committed to reducing gridlock," Bloomberg spokesman Farrell Sklerov said.

What's up with all the cameras? First on the subway and now on the bus?

There are already cameras on buses. Some buses out of Quill I believe.

But these cameras in the article are going to be on street, like the cameras that catch drivers that run a red light.

Do the idle cars get affected as well, or just the parked ones? By idle I mean the person is in the car waiting for somebody or something.

Anyone in a car using the bus lane. Doesn't matter if parked, idle, or driving. They have to keep out of it. This includes those "roaches"......
