Trainspotter 0 Posted May 23, 2008 Share #1 Posted May 23, 2008 Senators fete the New Jersey Giants TRENTON, N.J. - The Super Bowl champion New Jersey Giants? That name can't be found in the National Football League standings. And the Giants helmets are emblazoned with a bold "NY" logo. But it was nevertheless proclaimed Thursday by New Jersey senators honoring this year's Super Bowl champions. "Whether you're a football fan or not, I'm sure you found yourself caught up in the hype this past winter with the success of the New Jersey Giants," said Sen. Paul Sarlo, D-Bergen. "I emphasize the New Jersey Giants." Sarlo's district includes Giants Stadium, where the Giants have played since 1976 while retaining their New York moniker. And though the Giants tell the world they're from New York, Garden State senators said their come-from-behind attitude represented more of a Jersey mentality. Sarlo said they resembled "gutsy New Jerseyans" and "what we are all about here in New Jersey." The Giants beat the heavily favored New England Patriots 17-14 in February's Super Bowl, ending New England's hopes for an undefeated season. The Senate presented a ceremonial resolution to head coach Tom Coughlin, who in turn gave Sarlo and Senate President Richard J. Codey new Giants helmets. "You must be at your best when your best is needed, and certainly our football team was," Coughlin said. The Giants and New York Jets, who have played in Giants Stadium since 1984, are building a new stadium near Giants Stadium that's to open in 2010. The new stadium includes a new practice facility for the Giants, while the Jets are building a new headquarters in Florham Park. "You'll be totally New Jersey, just like the Jets," Codey, D-Essex, told Coughlin. The ceremony enlivened the usually reserved Senate, especially when Codey grabbed a football and unleashed a perfect pass across the Senate chamber to Sen. Nicholas Scutari, D-Union. DOB2RTO 29 Posted May 23, 2008 Share #2 Posted May 23, 2008 In 2010 both of them will officially have no ties to N.Y, but by a name on their helmet (actually I don't think the Giants do now).......N.J. senators are correct to call the Giants New Jersey Giants, and the Jets should be called the Jersey Jets. They don't play here, so N.Y. gains no reasonable revenue from either team............

DOB2RTO 29 Posted May 23, 2008 Share #4 Posted May 23, 2008 Very true...However, I think New Yorkers are WAY more hyped up about the teams then the New Jersians. That is because they still sport the N.Y name. If it said N.J., New Yorkers would realize that their "2 teams" have no ties here. All it takes is just the removing of one letter, the Y, and changing it to J. N.J. would be more hyped up. NYers would still go to games though. Only the suck a$$ Bills represent N.Y......... Pablo M 201 35 Posted May 23, 2008 Share #5 Posted May 23, 2008 I totally agree with te article. The Giants and Jets should drop the NY name and put in NJ. As much as NY sounds better, I 'll get use to NJ. If they're gonna play here, they're gonna have to carry our name!
metsfan 2 Posted May 23, 2008 Share #6 Posted May 23, 2008 Perhaps NY will develop an actual team that pays within city limits (or the same state for that matter). Soon will they not only have 2 baseball teams, but 2 basketball teams as well. With the devils so close by, it all most seams like a bit of an overload of the same sport. Islanders, rangers, nets, knicks, jets, giants, mets, yanks? I'm a philly fan aside from the mets, and we only have one of each sport team here. I'll never be able to figure it out (aside from people wanting to make money). - Andy

Harry 1,090 Posted May 23, 2008 Share #9 Posted May 23, 2008 They are called the "New York Giants", "New York Football Giants". Who cares where they play. A lot of people who live in New Jersey work and make their $money$ in New York, are they New Yorkers, no. Some of these people spend more time at work (in New York) than they do at home. I know a lot of them. If the Giants and Jets had some descent space to put a stadium for them to play in they would. They tried already a few times. Now don't get me wrong, I do not dislike or hate New Jersey. I happen to like it very much out there. I plan on buying a house out there in a couple of years. metsfan 2 Posted May 24, 2008 Share #12 Posted May 24, 2008 Its already being built. I think Xanadu is going to be ok. Ugh. I saw the renderings. It looks like 45 different people had 50 different ideas and none were fully followed through. Like a kit-bash of styles. Ones that don't look good together. - Andy
