Rockaway rider Posted January 31, 2013 Share #1 Posted January 31, 2013 Ever since storm Sandy washed out the tracks of the A subway line south of Howard Beach, the Q53 express bus is now the only remaining connection between Howard Beach (& north of it areas) and Broad Channel & Rockaway Park. No discernable augmentation in frequency of this bus service was made in order to accomodate the additional riders who had been riding the A train to Broad Channel & the Rockaways. Frequently, there is not enough room on the bus to take in all who had been waiting at the bus stop for it. Far Rock Depot Posted February 1, 2013 Share #4 Posted February 1, 2013 The the focus for the OP is Howard Bch and Broad Channel. the Shuttle doesnt serve these communities. (Cant count Howard Bch) Although there are two LTDs now (Q52/Q53), buses have never been more crowded(before i moved atleast). Why can't put two shuttle buses? I also think Seastreak should be extended from Beach 108th St pier to Broad Channel and JFK Airport if possible. It ran from Rockaway Blvd to Beach 98th st where you would take the shuttle train to either Rock Pk or Far Rock. Now B98th was a small one way street and was highly congested with buses and people. It was about 3 years or so ago they went with that current GO routing. 2 Buses one to Rock pk/Broad Channel and one to Far Rock with the train still shuttling between the two ends. Now the reason why they dont do it now is simple: this isnt a weekend GO. This is a temporary 24/7 service change. Full time, full load of passengers. Now as far as Broad Channel, only a small handful of people need to actually walk through the turnstiles of this stop. Passengers can transfer to the 52/53 at Rockaway Blvd. No need for yet more shuttle buses that will take away from the main bulk of riders. Have you seen the shuttle bus operation at Howard Beach? Its not as simple as just putting buses because it was done during weekend track work. Riders are already provided the means of making their trips. Theres a 3-legged transfer in and out of rockaway, 24/7 Q22 service between Far Rock and Rock Park. and an extra hour for use of those transfers. Rock Pk is covered by 3 bus routes. Broad Channel is covered by two. and all 5 will get you to a subway or the shuttle bus on one fare. thats why a second shuttle bus route is not needed. As far as seastreak, are those boats at crush load? Is there a major demand at Broad Channel for it? Where would it dock? Is there a dock? how much would it cost for them to build one? Then theres JFK. Where to dock? is there a demand for a service? I can understand your question for Broad Channel, although being a former Rockaway resident, I can tell you that its not needed. But why JFK? the train station(which has train service) is about a mile north of the water and theres no way for the boat to reach it. Then theres along the bay, which is runway tarmac. Even if they were to add more runs, or even artics, the traffic along X-bay Blvd will always cause it. And IMO, the more runs, the more buses per bunch.
