You sit elbow to elbow with strangers. Killing time. Avoiding eye contact. Just going to work or back home. Then there are those “only in New York” moments that are truly wonderful. A few Saturdays ago, a No. 1 train’s departure north out of the South Ferry terminal station was delayed by a construction project up the line. The train would be going nowhere for 10 minutes, the conductor said. A trio of gray-haired doo-wop panhandler performers, and two or three passengers, were in the first car.
