10 trip Questions

Recommended Posts

I have a ten trip and the conductor accidentally punched an extra a hole in my ten trip. By the time I checked my ten trip and realized what the conductor did, I was already off the train. I went to information to see what they could do. They told me that I should use the ten trip up and then after the last trip is used then I should bring back the ten trip. All conductors have different hole punchers so they will look over the ten trip to see if it there was an extra hole punched. I went to one of the ticket booths and they said that I should use up the whole ten trip and then return the ten trip and they will check to see if the conductor did punch the ten trip twice. If the conductor did do that then they will refund me for the trip.

I know that each conductor has different hole puncher that is their own. But the ticket booth told me that they can actually track down the conductor from the hole punch itself. Can they really do that?

Also, if this ever happens to me again and I catch the conductor doing it, what are my choices in getting back that trip from the conductor? Do I have go through this process of getting a refund? Or is there a way for the conductor to mark the 10 trip that a mistake was made?

Next time you use it, explain to the conductor what happened.  Stray punches in #'s other than the intended one is not uncommon.  There's a chance he or she will see what happened and do the right thing.  If it he or she doesn't accept that mistakenly punched ride, don't push the issue.  Do what was otherwise recommended.

From what I saw once, the conductor signed the ticket on the back when he punched the wrong spot.

This is exactly what happened when it happened to me....

What exactly is the advantage of buying a ten trip anyway? There doesn't appear to be any discount on peak tickets at all (there is a savings on non-peak tickets for the ten pack), and aside from that, you have to buy a peak or off-peak pack. Can you buy that on your phone? I've only done single tickets on my phone.

Seems like it would make sense for Metro-North to incentivize purchasing more tickets via the phone. Printing those tickets cost money along with the upkeep from the machines. Additionally, you could avoid such mistakes as described above.

Thank you. I am going to do that next time. It is amazing that they can track a conductor just by the punch holes.

You can buy ten-trips on the phone, at least I remember having the option for LIRR.

Makes more sense. You avoid that problem mentioned above. Seems like the regular commuters are old school. I see more folks using the cell phones for their tickets on weekends. Edited by Via Garibaldi 8

I'm not going to lie, I trust the app way more for smaller purchases; a monthly is way too big of a purchase for me to feel comfortable making on an app.

The only thing that gets me about the app is how no one seems to scan the tickets with anything other than their eyes. Weren't things to do this handed out?

They were but I have yet to see anyone use them. On Metro-North they just announce to have the ticket activated before the train leaves GCT. I also don't trust the app for anything more than singles. Phone is stolen, lost, gets some funky virus and that ticket may be bye-bye

Yes, the I phones the conductors use can supposedly scan the etix, however it has yet to be phased in (for what ever reason).  The scanners are currently used to scan drivers licenses.

There are security features to prevent fraudulent use of e tickets by checking them visually as there are many that feel they can take a screen shot, or print them out for use.

I had no idea they did. That's so clever. [emoji1]
