R46 (A) Train and End of R40 Slants

Don't forget, some of them are not everyday riders. I'm sure many are occasional riders, and their stories do not reflect the "true opinion" (if any) of the E rider.

I don't regard that site as a rail fan site. I've ridden the E for over 40 years. Yes, I'm an elder at this site. I'm from St. Albans, Queens. I've heard for years that the E has crap trains from folks at Jamaica Center. Some wanted to put in a racial component to running R32s on the line that I absolutely rejected. There are other forums on the web where people complain of the same points brought up from these riders. Ancient trains, bad HVAC, screechy brakes and overall noise level. E riders did show a preference to the R46 that serviced the line infrequently. They thought the E should not be singled out to run the R32s as the F, G, R and V ran almost all R46s up to the past year and a half or so.

How can passengers not notice brand new trains? Yes, they may get used to them. Like I said before, it's a middling priority vs. safety, trains running on schedules without delays, and other practical concerns, but they definitely prefer newer trains to very old ones. Some may prefer the 75 footers however due to their having more seats. To say they don't notice what type of train they ride isn't accurate. E riders vocally have requested updated equipment for over 10 years now, and that is revealed in the MTA's own surveys (report card comments).

"based on 12 reviews" So 12, 'reviewers' = (E) ridership? ha!

I said clearly a few E riders. And it was just one place as an example. I did not present it as definitive proof of anything.

There are other places on the web, some forums, some neighborhood sites, where "commuters" express a disdain for the equipment on the E line vs. the other QB lines.

Here's the list so far of R46 on the (A). There's another set I forgot the numbers that were on the (A).

6146-6147-6149-6148, 6184-6185-6183-6182

6166-6167-6169-6168, 6154-6155-6157-6156

6150-6151-6153-6152, 6206-6207, 6234-6232

6134-6135-6137-6136, 6258-6256, 6244-6246

6158-6159-6161-6160, 6190-6191-6193-6192

6188-6189-6187-6186, 6202-6203-6205-6204

6130-6131-6133-6132, 6164-6165-6163-6162

Another 2 sets are supposed to be transferred and 2 more sets of R40 Slants are retiring. Looks like they are really accelerating the process of R40 Retirements as it looks like they will all be gone in June.

Exactly. It is human nature to want better train cars that offer a smoother and more relaxing ride. The R160s and the R44/46s offer that to the Queens Blvd. Riders while the (E) gets the crappy trains.

This is not foaming at all. Would you want to ride a train full of people with no A/C from Jamaica all the way to Queens Blvd., or ride a more roomier train with A/C from point A to B.

Thanks for the info, Trainspot. Those slants would probably be gone around Memorial Day.

They'll probably preserve some R40s for work trains like R38s 4140-4141 since R40s have excellent A/C for the summer and another pair for the museum. These pairs would most likely be slanted R40As since all the base order slants were in the worse conditions and had been reefed.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8330/4.3.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/104)

I didn't see R40's all weekend long. Which is maybe gone for good. Will they put a R40 in the transit museum?

They are still around, you just have to wait even longer if you want to catch one. I supposed another 10 cars when to the death yard.

I wonder why I'm so lucky because everytime I ride the (A) I at least see a R40 Slant running. But then again I've only been on a R46 (A) once.

I'm going to wait for them tomorrow at canal st & ride to times sq if i catch one. If not after 6 trains i'm going to get going cuz i got stuff to do & a schedule to keep in the evening. Gonna use my rugged & reliable stylus 770sw, so dont expect spectacular photos as its focused on durability & has an older image processor.

hi ya'll! Ive been riding the (A) for 19 years. everyday. Today i did see slants. and 3 sets of 46s. I will miss the slants. always loved them. They are rocky when speeding across the bay though.

And the 46s do feel smoother than the 44s. But it wont make a difference once they finish replacing the old track with new track w/concrete ties. Thats a REALLY smooth ride!

A little off topic but I thought APs were done last week.

No, there are actually 2 sets of APs (the early test date or the late test day), the last of all APs is this Friday, Physics C. I'm taking AP Calculus AB.

Anyway, I'm going to snap every slant that I see when I am in transit.

I don't think public schools are. One of my friends from Stuy has APs this week too, and MTR goes to Bronx. My school is done though.

But enough about that. Apologies for going off topic.

I rode a slant on the (A) Friday evening and I rode it from 14th to Lefferts and then to 207th because it might've be my last time on the slants and it was wonderful. It was lead car 4280. I saw at least 2 other sets of slants running on the (A) that day. I will miss the slants. Those are/were some fast cars. It's going to be strange riding along the B division and not see at least one set of slants running.

I was at Broadway Nassau, coming back from the (4). There was a Lefferts R44 and I let it leave because it was rather crowded. So I was saying to myself, the next train is a slant. Then seconds later, a slant pulls up on the NB track!!! Snapped a few while it was still in the station, I'll upload them around Thursday.

I'm glad that the SMS fixed up the R46s' sqeaky brakes, but they are still quite shaky even on slow runs. Do you know if they replaced any ties on the 8th Avenue/Fulton Express?

Excellent catch! When the R38s were almost done, I waited on 125th for over an hour before a solid set arrived.

I'm just that lucky sometimes! ;)

Urbanfortitude is a lucky charm himself. He's like a slant magnet. I went railfanning with him, Metatops and QM4JewelAve. At 42nd, when he got off the (E), we all saw a slant.
