  1. Smart politics would be to just do it and let those Righties get really pissed off so it reminds voters that when they get angry, they try overthrowing the US Government. But Schumer & Co believe the folks across the aisle are friends and good people. Which is why Dems don't keep majorities long, lost flyover country's legislative majorities, and the country went to 5#|7 since 1995.
  2. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Yeah I'm less likely to notice that than I am to go to the front of any car and read the barcode sticker. That's the loss the subway fan community has to deal with - looking for minor details instead of just looking down the tunnel and seeing a slant or vertical lights to know it's a different train. Fleet commonality is kinda lame.
  3. Too true. I still don’t get how y’all can tell the difference between a R160 and R179 on sight. Fanning was better when you could sit at Marcy Av and see two R160s, the occasional R143, then R32 and a R42 in the same 10 minutes. Now it’s just trains.
  4. It’s interesting that they came for you on that when I posted entire Twitter threads here about that one s52/42 driver who always found a way to leave late or claim his bus broke so he didn’t have to drive. Oh well.
  5. The folks being “babysat” (not exhaustive): • Blind people • People who relocated from one neighborhood to another • People who sustained temporary or permanent injuries who are trying to get home without hiring a car • Tourists •People new to transit •People litigious about the ADA •People who give a damn about other people It’s amazing to me the things folks here get upset about, but the getting upset about train announcements giving riders information about step-free access and bus transfers is a new and sad one. And by sad I mean “this is the hill you chose to stake a claim on?
  6. CSX gave the City title to the line in 2005. https://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/17/nyregion/metro-briefing-new-york-manhattan-city-takes-title-to-high-line.html
  7. Only difference is the enabling act. Agencies just get legislation enabling their existence and the funding to operate is through the NYS General Fund and NYS bonds; PBCs get the relevant legislation but also incorporate so they can issue debt separate from NYS and keep the state from being responsible for it. But they’re still state agencies since NYS Legislature has ultimate control of funding mechanisms and NY Governors control the boards.
  8. Proximity to Manhattan and more flights to mid market towns than JFK/EWR. There used to be two flights from EWR & JFK to Sacramento, ZERO to Long Beach (CA) and ZERO to Ontario (CA) - I’d have to fly to SFO or LAX then spend at least 90 minutes driving to Sacramento, San Juan Capistrano, or San Bernardino. LGA would get me a connection to each airport at Chicago, SLC, ATL or DFW, and would cost less by $50+.
  9. Federalist 15 through 23, 26-28, 52-53, 62-65, and 70 feel differently.
  10. Yup. They’ll ride it. Just like NYers flying out of and into LGA. Sorry that disappoints you.
  11. To transit fans, yes it is. But to folks with a cheap ticket to Chicago or Atlanta, or connecting to the West Coast, with several bags, they’re going to pay that sky high fare to avoid being stuck in traffic in cabs or on buses and possibly missing the flight - whether coming from the City or LI.
  12. Because NYS appoints more board members than NYC (by virtue of NYS owning the bridges and railroads, and legally financing and subsidiary agencies), and those appointments are treated at patronages.
  13. If pylons haven’t been placed in the ROW, it could still be cancelled. It’s not like abandoned pre-operational infrastructure doesn’t exist in NYC. And it’s not like - assuming infrastructure has been placed, that 1) the plans couldn’t be modified, or 2) couldn’t take over the project as is or have PA keep it and run it like BART does eBART from Willets over to Astoria Blvd or even down to QBP - with or without separate fares.
  14. True story, I won all-in hands 4x in one night with 7 and 2 - two full houses, two two pairs. Was on Xbox Live though.
  15. Remember I said in the other post how and before never factored in cleaning to regular budgets and - roughly quoting myself - ‘if it weren’t for Covid they never would’ve bought so much as a bottle of Fabuloso’? I’m on your side. If the Chicago El is roughly the same age as most of the subway but looks like CTA gave a damn about looks and maintenance, surely could’ve been bothered if it weren’t for a deliberate choice to not be. But their assertion that shutdowns are for deep cleaning (and not to keep hobos out the system) isn’t holding up since overnights they can get the cars during the 15 minute layovers at terminals and they used to hose stations down while passengers were waiting for the next train (you remember stepping on hoses and in puddles of soapy mop water?). The Covid justification isn’t holding up because of direct evidence around the world and in NY. Plus your and your allies’ pressure factor into going from “OMG!!!!!!” fear to rational thinking on these operations rules. There’s no reason for to not keep deep cleaning everything post-COVID except deliberate intransigence. I only wish they’d used these closures to fix more of the things that cause problems - like cleaning the drains, water intrusion remediation, and subway mosquito abatement (the things that actually contribute to virus spreads).
  16. Drawing left at Tuskegee Airmen Depot. NBC 4 says you could get a tour of the depot because of it. https://m.facebook.com/232635164606/posts/10158110559124607/?d=n
  17. But the evidence thus far shows public transport isn’t a Covid spreader, and that the cleanings aren’t doing much since Covid isn’t proved to be spread from surface contact. I suspect that’s why the shutdown was reduced to two hours.
  18. You ever been stuck on M60 or Q70 in traffic getting to or from LGA? I have to leave earlier, and get home later - including SI Ferry time - dealing with LGA than I do with JFK - including international flying. Even AirTrain LGA is an improvement. If you mean the Orange Line, they’re rebuilding that to have overpasses and to convert to LRT by 2050. If you mean the Harbor Transitway, it took them ~10 years to build that - I was 9 or 10 when that started, 20 when it finished, and another 8 years until Metro created the Silver Line to run on it and get real ridership vs using the old 400/500 Express Buses with a much higher fare that were barely ridden. And it actually started out as a carpool lane/express toll road idea. The difference between LA’s busways and NYC is that LA’s busways are/were built to benefit the wealthy by “modifying” the low and middle class areas they had to drive through to get to DTLA or the Red Line, while NYC busways are “modifying” wealthy areas to benefit everyone.
  19. Riding a local on Eastern Pkwy, and the stop announcements now say if there’s elevators at the next station. When did this start?
  20. It started because of droplets, folks not washing/sanitizing hands because of the hand sanitizer shortage, and because “tittay money” is sweaty. Businesses kept taking cash because 1) they likely didn’t have a POS setup because of debit and internet fees, 2) there was talk in 2019 of a law in the city to mandate accepting cash, and 3) easier to lower taxes by under reporting cash transactions (like tipped staff do when getting cash tips). But I don’t think that your premise will pan out - OMNY may negate token booth staff from touching any MetroCard, but they’ll still need to do issues resolution when machines go down or folks need fare media transfers when something goes wrong.
  21. Or it’s highlighting how dirty things are and aiming to make leaders actually invest in cleaning things/environmental protection so it brings down astronomical healthcare costs by reducing occurrences of pathogens and particulates that cause respiratory ailments that require intensive and expensive treatments.
  22. Decades of metal on metal dust and water intrusion means those walls definitely have to have black mold or mildew on them. Not to mention all the trash that used to be in the trackways, and human waste from homeless and others. But it’s like I said in the other thread - other TAs budgeted in state of good repair and décor maintenance into their budgets, while didn’t buy so much as a bottle of Fabuloso until COVID.
  23. My thoughts: Interesting how with this overnight shutdown for cleaning they’re not scrubbing the tunnel walls and track beds - those shouldn’t be black How many of these drainage pipes in the system could both use some unclogging and sludge removal, along with some bleach to kill the bacteria emanating from them? On that part citing the third rail friction as the cause, I wonder if that’s why Paris Métro’s third rail system is a vertical contact shoe in a housing On that part about wheel friction with the rail, would a rubber tire conversion clean the air /fin
