So thats what those amber lights are for!

 

Nope, those lights turn on when there's a bum detected :(

No. I think all the trains that I rode waited for the "ambalamps" (:() to go off.

Err... no? They're there for a reason, unless you want one of those old fashioned movie scenes with the trains colliding...

 

Holding lights keep trains on schedule, not intact.

Holding lights are generally used to allow the local and express trains to make a connection

 

Kind of, they are really meant to keep trains on time. If a train is running hot (early) it will be held to keep it on time. Sometimes they are used to hold train if there is a delay ahead of them. Also, many places there trains will enter service and are not terminals are getting starting lights (3 green lights).
