DOB2RTO 29 Posted March 5, 2008 Share #2 Posted March 5, 2008 What can be done to ease congestion and overcrowding in the subways? Add more cars, and make longer trains. If the stations can handle 700ft of train, make 13 car IRT trains (663ft), 9 car 75ft trains (675ft), and 11 car 60 ft trains (660ft).

The problem is that some stations are shortened when they are rehabilitated so that they fit either 480', 600', or 510' worth of train space. Also, all of the subway cars in our system (aside from the ones being retired) are built in 4 or 5 car sets.
Phil D. 0 Posted March 5, 2008 Share #5 Posted March 5, 2008 Adding 1 more car to the trains really ain't going to help much, lol.
Pablo M 201 35 Posted March 6, 2008 Share #6 Posted March 6, 2008 Trains are going to have to run much closer to each other. Not very easy if the proper signaling system isn't up, but its doable in the MTA.
sebbieprops 0 Posted March 9, 2008 Share #7 Posted March 9, 2008 More frequent headways is the best solution.

But cant they just tell the passengers to move toward the front of the train at a station if they want to exit? Thats what they do on the the at Bowling Green Sta...... I think thats the one. It's been a minute, but they said the doors wouldn't open on the cars in the back.
