Wow, rats in the subway...what else is new. I actually read throught that whole thing and left a comment...

Are you serious? HELLO PEOPLE WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE!!!!! This is New York City. For every person living in this city, there's a rat (or 2) living. Did most of you forget that the subway is directly above the sewer system, of course there's gonna be rats. No matter how mush you gripe and complain and want to do something about it, the rats are always gonna be there. Its the natural way of life. Its not like one came up your leg and attacked you or something. We have more important things in this city to worry about than some rats in the train station. If there's so much of a problem, then take the bus or drive.

You ride the (1) train and say that?

What do you think those critters are that practically own that line are? :P

The NYPD had several 61's (crime reports) of people being robbed near the ends of the platforms on the (1) line. They were all down graded to missing property, but before that, the suspects were rats. Large switch blade carrying rats.

I agree with Fresh Pond on this; whether we like it or not rats are a fixture in the system for reasons that go far beyond littering or improper storage and disposal of garbage and minimizing layoffs, fare hikes, and service cuts is far more important to me than blowing several billion dollars on fumigation or public awareness campaigns. If the rats are really bothering commuters that much, then why not take groups of cats from the pound that are

a) most likely not going to be adopted

:P over a certain size and weight, and

c) capable of fighting/fending for themselves

and introduce them into the stations with the biggest rat problem? They would be semisocialized already (in many cases animals in shelters wind up there for reasons completely independent of their behavior) and would not spook at nor pose a threat to passengers or TA workers, would be able to keep the rat problem down to a dull roar by preying on them. The shelters would be more than happy to give (MTA) the cats free of charge, and the program would only cost a few hundred dollars a year per station if you assume that part of the crew quarters will be equipped with bedding, food for when rats become hard to catch, etc. and supply an allotment for medical care if something goes wrong.

Would never work, some people are allergic to cats. Rats will be rats, if you dont want em in teh stations, dont throw crap onto the tracks and put your food garbage where it belongs, in the garbage can.
