Subway - What If?

Yeah but it's not really missing that many stations and it is unnecessary. I could understand suspending the (C) if it were to cut off at say, Jay St,but this goes to Utica, and Utica can handle both as a temporary terminal.

Uptown (A) train derails on the switch between the express and local tracks north of 145 St. The uptown express and local tracks in that area are impassible.

(A) No trains between 125 St and 168 St.

(B) to Bedford Pk middays

(C) No trains between 145 St and 168 St.

NEXTDue to a Police investigation, no trains can pass through Broadway Junction/East New York (A)(C)(J)(L)(Z). Reroute accordingly.

(A) runs in two sections:

Normal service to Jay Street, then via the (F) as an express to Coney Island, replacing the (F) after Church Avenue operating the (F) 's normal route.

Euclid Avenue-Lefferts Avenue (Local)

(C) runs 168th Street-Utica Avenue.

(A) Shuttle buses operate express from Jay Street-Utica Avenue and local Utica-Euclid Avenue.

(F) shortened to Church Avenue as the (A) replaces the (F) Church Avenue-Coney Island

(J) runs in two sections:

Broad Street-Myrtle Avenue

Alabama Avenue-Jamaica Center

(J) Shuttle Bus Myrtle Avenue-Alabama Avenue

(L) operates in two sections:

8 Avenue-Myrtle Avenue

Atlantic Avenue-Rockaway Parkway

(L) Shuttle Bus Myrtle Avenue-Atlantic Avenue

This is where CBTC on the (L) hurts because otherwise, you could have in this scenario the (J) operate Rockaway Parkway (L) station-Jamaica Center as I would do.

I am just going to assume that you are extending the Rockaway (S) too?

Yes, I forgot that one:

(S) extended to Euclid Avenue and in the Rockaways operates as a round-robin to both Far Rockaway and Rockaway Park (the old late-night Rockaway (A)).

Next:

A track fire at 36th Street-4th Avenue makes the station unusable in both directions. Trains can loop through Coney Island to minimize the need for shuttle bus service.

That's a lot of service on the Brighton line, don't you think?

Here's how I do this one:

(B) - Bedford Park Blvd/145 St to 2 Av or WTC (to open up Brighton tracks)

(D) - 205 St to 9 Av via Brighton Express & Coney Island

(N) - split service; Ditmars Blvd to APB (4th Avenue platforms) via Whitehall, 59 St to Coney Island

(R) - split service; 71 Av to Whitehall St, 59 St/4 Av to 95 St single tracked

use nearby buses for 4th Avenue service between Pacific Street and 59th Street/4th Avenue

They had the (B)(D)(N)(Q)(R) on the Brighton once, the (D)(R) Brighton Express, and the (N) Brighton Local when they were having some problems at 4 Av, so everything should be alright. But I probably should have added some more buses.

NEXT

Due to a transformer blowing up, the power goes out on the (2)<5> President St to Flatbush Av, and the (B)(Q) Parkside Av to Brighton Beach. No trains can pass Parkside Av on the Express, or they will lose power. Reroute accordingly.

In the interest of minimizing and simplifying changes:

(D)(N) Run via Brighton Local, through Coney Island to 9 and 8 Av respectively.

(B) Terminates at Atlantic-Barclays.

(Q) Terminates at Brighton Beach to not get in the way of the (D)(N) at Coney Island.

(R) No service south of Atlantic-Barclays. TBH, a train from 59 to 95 St could be run, but it would be nearly useless.

(2) After Chambers St, runs via the (1) to Rector St, then reverses through Old South Ferry and returns uptown.

(5) No service south of Bowling Green.

(B) No trains south of 2 Av.

(Q) Trains run via the (N) Atlantic Av to Coney Island, then up to Brighton Beach.

Because of a flooding condition, Astor Place (4)(5)(6) and 8 St (N)(R) are impassable (express tracks too). Let's see if anyone recognizes this (this actually happened, in a rather famous incident).

This is a really, really hard one. Practically the whole system would be screwed up...

(2)(3) some trains run local in Manhattan, and/or terminate at South Ferry

(4) Utica Av-Wall St

(4) Woodlawn - Grand Central-42 St, with some trains terminating at 149 St-Grand Concourse or 125 St

(5) runs via (2) between Nevins St and 149 St-Grand Concourse

(6) Pelham Bay Park - Grand Central-42 St, with some trains terminating at 3 Av-138 St

(B) runs via 8 Av local, terminates at 2 Av

(D) runs local on 6 Av

(M) terminates at Chambers St

(C) runs via 8 Av Express

(N) Coney Island - 34 St via 6 Av Express

(N) Astoria-Ditmars - 34 St

(Q) Coney Island - Prospect Park

(R) Bay Ridge-95 St - Whitehall St

(J) some trains extended to 9 Av (D) Station

The current K-mart building at Astor Place caught fire, and the water from the hoses seeped down into the subway. They just suspended service back then...

Would any of you like to take a look at a track map to see why looping around Coney Island isn't possible? http://images.nycsubway.org/trackmap/pm_southeast.png

As you can see by it, trains going between Brighton and West End both ways would have to share ONE track, plus get in the way of (N) trains, rendering it a gridlock situation at Coney Island. Coney Island looks like it was built for use as a terminal only, the tracks connecting it are not meant to be used for thru service.

Are you sure that the single track at Whitehall can handle both the (N) and the (R)? And why would you terminate the (5) at 34 St? Also, if this is an unexpected service change, where will you store all of the NIS (B) trains? Send them to the yard and clog other tracks to get them there? Edited by TheSubwayStation

Due to a transformer blowing up, the power goes out on the 2/5 President St to Flatbush Av, and the B/Q Parkside Av to Brighton Beach. No trains can pass Parkside Av on the Express, or they will lose power. Reroute accordingly.

Here goes:

(2) runs downtown via 7th Avenue, after Chambers via the (1) to Rector Street and then through old South Ferry and then uptown via the (5) to 149th Street before resuming regular route as one of two loops.

(3) and (4) are unaffected.

(5) runs normal service downtown only between Dyre Avenue-Bowling Green, then goes through the old South Ferry loop and runs uptown via the (1) and then (2) to 149th Street before resuming regular route.

(B) runs to Prospect Park only.

(Q) runs from Brighton Beach through Coney Island via Sea Beach Express or West End Express to Manhattan/Atlantic-Barclays and via the other from Manhattan/Atlantic-Barclays.

Because of a flooding condition, Astor Place 4/5/6 and 8 St N/R are impassable (express tracks too). Let's see if anyone recognizes this (this actually happened, in a rather famous incident).

Here goes:

(1)/(2)/(3) are unaffected.

(4) operates in two sections:

Utica Avenue-Brooklyn Bridge

Grand Central-Woodlawn

(5) operates Grand Central-Dyre Avenue only.

(N)/® operate to/from Canal Street only from Brooklyn, uptown from 34th Street.

Shuttle buses operate between Brooklyn Bridge/Chambers Street and Grand Central. For 6th Avenue stations, transfer at Broadway-Lafayette OR take (J) to Essex Street and switch to the (M) or (F) there. For Broadway stations north of 34th, take subways as noted and switch to Broadway Line at 34th Street-6th Avenue. For Times Square, take shuttle bus to (7)/(S) at Grand Central.

So uptown (5) train service on Lex is replaced with the (2), and uptown (2) service on 7th/Broadway is replaced by the (5)?

As I recall, that has been done in the past where the (2) and (5) have run on the 7th Avenue Line in one direction and on the Lexington Avenue Line going the other.
