Yes it is interesting why the clearances are different as seen in MTA Bus's latest photo set showing the visual comparison. Legend has it August Belmont did not want railroad companies at the time to set the stage for acquisition of his IRT which was why the tunnel infrastructure was built to smaller clearances forcing the operation of the size of approximately 11.90 long x 8.60 feet wide cars, too small for conventional railroad size cabs. That was until the Dual Contracts were finalized where the remainder of the IRT system were indeed built to BMT clearances. And on that note thanks MTA Bus for the contribution!
