Charleston Depot now has Prevosts

I saw 2490 with a Charleston Depot stick on it running up Madison on the X22 this morning.  Since that was the test bus and it had been tested out of Ulmer Park and on Staten Island, apparently they're making some progress on that Prevost order.

What's the hold up anyway with this order? 6 months is more than enough and now it's been about 9. We should be almost at #2600 by now...

Charleston have the MCI D4500CLs/CTs... I wonder why its there, tbh I thought its Yukon

Charleston will need new buses just like Yukon because both depots have routes that have long trips that eat up mileage (i.e. X1, X2, X5, X7, X9, X22, X17, etc).  The Downtown routes are a little better, but not by much.

I wonder who will get them first. Meredith should in my opinion since they have nothing but 2001-2002 MCI D4500s.

The order is slowly coming in...2492 is at Zerega. 2493 and 94 are in Jersey.

The order was put on hold due to a spec change. Don't know what it is. It was same with 8090. 8090 was late all thanks to SEPTA. So MTA changed the specs last minute so that Nova doesnt have to do a whole new redesigning and quickly push our order and SEPTA's order out.

Meredith is only open during the week so they put less miles on their buses.  Nevertheless, I'm sure they'll get those buses replaced.  It's just a question of when and who needs the buses the most.

Well in that case, Yukon, Castleton, and Ulmer Park might get their's first then.

Ulmer Park doesn't have that many old buses left, as they received a decent amount of Prevosts from the first batch.  Also, they only have the X27/X37 and X28/X38, and only the X27 runs on weekends, so mileage isn't such an issue.  If I had to choose, I would say it would be Yukon.  They put the most mileage and wear and tear on their buses, and have the X1, which is the busiest express bus line in the city, and it also runs 24/7.  Castleton only has the X10, X14 and X21, and only the X10 runs on weekends.

About Meredith, that depot runs only on rush hours, the MCIs run 1 trip for the AM then 1 for PM rush and thats about it

Yeah their crisis is their sh*tty maintenance... They should have enough room now for maintenance, plus they received a decent amount of Prevosts, so they don't really have an excuse.

I thought Yukon can hold 400 buses. I thought with the opening of Charleston, things would be a little better.

Well it took so long to get a new depot on Staten Island (a good 20 years+) that by the time Charleston was opened, just about all of the space had already been accounted for, so all the new depot did was alleviate overcrowding at Castleton and Yukon. Castleton is in poor shape and Yukon is not exactly a modern facility either.  Meredith isn't really a full fledged depot, and quite frankly it should be given the location.  They should expand there and build a modern depot that can hold even more buses, then rehabilitate or tear down Yukon and Castleton accordingly.  Last I heard there were talks about a 5th depot and supposedly they had already located space for it, but I haven't heard anything since.  That was a few years ago when I was still living on Staten Island.  The census is that more express bus service is still needed along with local bus service in order to meet the rapid population growth (particularly on the South Shore, hence all of the new X17, X21 and X22 express bus service), and those expansions will be difficult until another depot is built.

Before Charleston opened, they had a legitimate excuse because both Yukon and Castleton were so overcrowded that they really had no room to maintain the fleet and meet the demands of service, hence why they needed to borrow buses from time to time from other depots just to make service, in addition to the age of most of their fleet.  Nevertheless, Yukon will always be the crown jewel when it comes to new buses because of the lines that it serves, particularly the X1.  The mileage and the beating that those buses have to the take don't leave the (MTA) much of a choice but to give them the new fleet first, but if their maintenance was better, they wouldn't be in such a crisis, because they don't really take care of their fleet.
