  1. Is/was passing between cars not prohibited in the New York subway? If it is, why were the modifications made to the Slants necessary?

      They still looked damn hot with the gates... but they were necessary...

      I'd be the first to agree with you but unfortunately you'll find that that is not an opinion shared by many. I maintain that their "as built" forms looked the best, though.

       

      Is that the same reason why the Mods and 42s also received gates?

      the slants needed the gates because it wasn't safe to pass b/w the ends of the cars. Obviously a person shouldn't be moving when the train is running, but 'it's for safety'.
