First of all how often do we even get the (B) outside of rush hours?

It has happened a few times before (some midday GOs), last time was in 2009 (middays and evenings)

Second when was the last time the (B) ran weekends?

Outside of Yankees/Barclays/Soccer specials, July 2001

Another point to bring up is the Yankees/Soccer specials. Do we even get those signed as (B) let alone (D) like that? Most are just "Special".

Some specials have been signed and announced as (B).  The Barclays specials using r160s are signed as (B) trains to 145 St.

Yes, but how are they going to deactivate the machines on weekends? They would have to be able to do it remotely if that is even possible. Or will they just keep your money if you don't see a sign saying no weekend service or tell you to give the receipt to the local operator instead of paying a fare?

Also, has anyone seen the new traffic congestion on the main road near Mr Sinai Hospital because of the unnecessary bus lanes, just as I predicted, with virtually no place to switch between the main road and service road making left or right turns very difficult for cars and trucks?

Just like how other SBS routes have deactivated machines late nights (like the Bx12 and Bx41) "SBS not running use the local"

I didnt say that. The (5) should have been the one to go local instead of the (4). Its best to have at least one service retain it's normal it's normal service pattern for simplicity sake.

The (4) has to go local overnight anyway, so the (5) makes more sense to be the express since it was express all night at the time.  The (5) also has a longer route in the Bronx than the (4) with more stops. A (5) rider to 241 St has a longer ride than a (4) rider to Woodlawn.

That was during Clark st weekend closures.

Yes, it also shows that MTA has to cut something, though the (6) train at 12 minute headways was still more total Lex service than the (5) train at 20 minute headways.

6 minutes ago, Lawrence St said:

That was the dumbest decision ever. We Jerome riders have to suffer in favor of the (5) which is downright stupid. If the (4) goes local, so should the (5) .

Would you prefer an overcrowded (4) train running express and no (5) train at all?  The (4) was suffering because of the (6), not the (5).

The (4) is suffering more now due to the (5) ending early almost every night, or not running much at all.

Nah, the better thing would be to have the (5) run at its normal headways despite being cut back to 149 Street. For some reason or another, that isn't possible because every time there's work on Lexington Ave (this past weekend, it was the northbound express run between Brooklyn Bridge and Grand Central), the (5) gets reduced, which is the real issue at play here. From an operations standpoint, it doesn't matter how the trains are labeled; it's that service reduction that's the problem. Normal (5)s or shortened (4)s - unless that reduction is removed, there will still be uneven loading on the main (4) trains.

Running the (5) normally would mean the (6) gets cut back to 12 minutes (like before when the (5) had more priority) and the (4) would have to run local to help the (6).

You are incorrect about the (4) . The (4) started running local during the overnights beginning in the 1980s. The (6) was cut to 125th Street until around 1999 when they decided to extend the late night (6) back to Brooklyn Bridge but kept the (4) local.

    Someone posted this:

From January 21 to October 5, 1990, late night service was extended back to Brooklyn Bridge when late night express service on the 4 was restored. But the 6 was then cut back to 125th Street for the last time when late-night express service on the 4 in Manhattan was permanently discontinued.

October 6 1990 would have been the last day as the 5th was a Friday.

Anyone have a 1990 map service guide or (4)(6) schedules that can confirm or deny this?

The only lines that run express during late nights are:

    -(3) between 96 St and 42 St

-(D) between 145 St and West 4 St

    -(F) between Forest Hills-71 Av and 21 St-Queensbridge

Before, the following lines used to run express during nights:

-(3) between 96 St and 14 St (weekends only until June 2018)

-(5) between 125 St and Brooklyn Bridge (weekends only until June 2018)

-(Q) between 57 St-7 Av and Canal St (until 2015)

-(2) between 96 St and Chambers St (until 1999)

-(4) between 125 St and Brooklyn Bridge (when the (6) operated to Brooklyn Bridge late nights during the 90s)

-(E) between Forest Hills-71 Av and Queens Plaza (until 1997)

-(R) between 59 St and 36 St (northbound only until 2016)

But IMO it would be good to make the (D) express on 4 Av during late nights. The (N) and (R) both can adequately cover the local stops. Yes, riders lose 6 Av service at Dekalb, but that's the case on weekends when the (B) doesn't run. (Q) to Whitehall is a non-starter due to making one long trip even longer.

I agree with running the (4) express between Franklin Av and Borough Hall because it already skips Hoyt St during late nights. Having it run express would eliminate the need for it to merge with the (2) at Nevins and would not only speed up service, but it would also eliminate merging.

Additional late night express service in bold

30th and 36th on the Astoria Line are really nice. I checked them out earlier today. 39th needs work badly.

The historical dual names are now eliminated in those stations. Looks like MTA has reversed their previous stance on keeping historical names with renovations (like on the (A)).

Extra Friday trains on the (5) from Eastchester-Dyre Av to Bowling Green from 10:13PM till 11:22PM are discontinued.

Regular Friday service after 8:30pm from Dyre to Bowling Green won't be running for the next several weeks either due to G.O.s The (5) trains ran until 10:48pm,  anything after that were (2) trains to South Ferry. Looks like the (2) and (4) are going to be even more crowded on Friday evenings.

  10. MTA has decided to open the Clark Street Tunnel while the previous pick schedule is still in effect, so now we have these services running S/B for about 1 hour

    (2) 241 - Flatbush

    (2) Dyre - South Ferry

    (5) Dyre - E 180

Going N/B after midnight we will have

    (2) Flatbush - 241

    (2) South Ferry - Dyre

    (5) E 180 - Dyre

The Dyre line has both the (2) and (5) S/B until midnight

7 Av gets extra service at the expense of Lexington

  11. MTA could try running the (3) (to 14 St , Chambers Street, or South Ferry), the (5) (to 42 St, Brooklyn Bridge, or Bowling Green), the (C)  (to Lefferts Boulevard),  and (R) (to 57 St or 71 Av)  Friday-Saturday late nights.  The (3), (5), (A), and (Q) will be the late night expresses those 2 nights a week. The (A) Lefferts shuttle will be replaced by the (C) for those two nights. Every Manhattan trunk will have one express on Friday and Saturday nights (currently every Manhattan trunk has a weekend late night express except the 8th Avenue and Broadway lines).

The (5) on Sunday-Thursday late nights should be extended to 149 St Grand Concourse. The (M) on Sunday-Thursday late nights could possibly be extended to Chambers Street (some late evening (M)s to this now) . The weekend (M) should be extended to Chambers Street after the (L) reopens in Manhattan.

The additional weekend late night service will run from Friday night 11:00PM to 8:00AM Sunday Morning (no more (3) and (5) shuttles running until after 7-8am Sunday mornings)

This is a middle ground between doing nothing and running these service 7 nights a week, it covers the two busiest nights. It would require permanently having a separate Sunday schedule, Monday-Thursday schedule,  Friday schedule, and a Saturday schedule.4

MTA currently has a separate Sunday schedule, Monday schedule (until 5am), Tuesday-Thursday schedule, Friday schedule (after 10pm on the (5), 10:30pm on the (2), and 11:00pm on the (3)), and a Saturday schedule on the (2),(3) and (5) trains. The complete Monday and Friday schedules are only shown in real time and not on the timetables.

That's stupid, have more (6) trains instead of forcing us Jerome riders to go local along with the (6).

    (5) has more priority than the (6) since it now runs to Brooklyn on weekends, so instead of the (5) running every 20 minutes, the (6) runs every 12 minutes (instead of 8) whenever the (4)(5) and (6) have to run on the same tracks on weekends.

The upper White Plains Road line now sees 12 minute headways on weekends instead of 8 minute headways. They also have a (5) train overnight with the choice if transferring to a (2) train at E 180 St which is usually about 1-3 minutes behind it. Much better than the usual (2) overnight trying to rush and connect with a (4) which may be leaving by the time the (2) gets to 149 St GC meaning up to 20+ minute waits discouraging ridership.

Weekend daytime riders suffer, but weekend late night riders benefit.

I heard stories of how chaotic the Bx12 sbs could be especially during rush hour while several people will just pass up the local service to get on the sbs route. I can’t figure out why people will totally pass up the local’s up, where in most situations I’ve been in they are usually only a few minutes slower. I know for example the Q44sbs is massively popular on Main Street compared to the Q20 and people will do that same pass up the nice empty local nonsense for the crowded select bus route. What I’ve noticed lately is that the local buses are sometimes even faster than the “faster” select bus route because select buses are stuck at stops picking up tons of people who just passed up the locals.

Bx12 SBS and Q44 SBS extend further than the Bx12 Local and Q20 Local, some people have to take the SBS

Yeah but then some people in midtown looking for SF would be confused and we just can't have that.

Then why not use the (3) crews on the (1) and (2) if they are that worried about someone not remembering to only open one set of doors at 145, or do they really think some crew would be stupid enough to make that mistake AND someone would be stupid enough in the cars not in the first few cars to be where the doors could open and NOT paying attention?

Not enough late night (3) crews to come completely cover the late night (1) to 148, so the issue of (1) crews stopping at 145 will still come up.

Right, but wasn't there an article saying the Eagle Team would no longer do patrols on local lines and would only focus their efforts on SBS lines? However I feel in the Bx15's case, it already moves really quick, is their a better alternative that we can get everyone to pay their fare without having people farebeat? Installing machines and having people go and patrol is a waste of money especially when it's just getting people to change their habits.

SBS would restore weekend rapid service to 3 Av and would replace the weekend Bx55 LTD service.
