  1. Please familiarize yourself with this board as well as nycsubway.org to educate yourself about the equipment. The mta does not build subway cars. That job is contracted out. R46's from the mid 70's are being replaced now and all their replacements are not even ordered as of today. Here they are replacing about 750 cars. There are over 1,000 IRT cars older than the R68/68A's. These should be replaced prior too. So we have a long way to go before we can order R268's which would ultimately replace the R68/68A's.
  2. You asked what a 12-9 is. It's someone struck by a train in any matter. Could be on the platform (train striking someone while the train was either entering or leaving the station, Could be the person under the train too
  3. I'll go out on a limb here about 9354. How do we know that 9354 is a training bus at JFK/FR for the operators and maintenance personnel? When they get their allotment in, maybe they'll keep it, or maybe they'll send it to Eastchester?
  4. I saw a pic of that on facebook. The "surfing" was 2 males riding on the outside of the train (last car of course).
  5. If you haven't seen a bus "in days", there's a very good possibility it's held for maintenance.
  6. OK then, so what would have been used for the E/F/R? We would only be running the M with CBTC and wasting all that money spent in putting CBTC along the Queens Blvd. lines because the R46's would not have left? Even Cuomo would not have the answer for that one!
  7. On Friday I rode on the R211T. From a passenger perspective I like the train. I rode northbound from Chambers St. to 168 and southbound 168 to Hoyt Schermerhorn. It ran nice, except for the hard stops made at the overwhelming majority of stations! I can live with all the new "bells and whistles". But from the perspective of operation, I have big issues. I am going by the rules of NYCT. I don't want to hear about Toronto or systems in Europe that have similar open gangways, because I don't know their rules for train operation, nor do I know if they have automatic tripping devices which would activate due to an obstruction on the roadbed not seen by the train operator till it's too late. All I know are the rules for operation at NYCT as per the procedures described below . In the case of a BIE, he is required to fully inspect the train from the roadbed if it re-charges. Debris or a body, they would have struck the automatic tripping device or a stop arm coming up underneath the train before it cleared, or maybe even if no cause is found (this would mean a problem with the train which the t/o would not be able to diagnose). In case of no clearance areas, the t/o must check in between the cars. There-in is the problem as his only entrance to the roadbed with the R211T is out the front (or rear 600' away) door. So instead, he has to go into the car body (while getting peppered with harassing and cussing passengers and he has no time to explain the process) and open a side door to climb down. But suppose there are bench walls in the way on both sides (or some other obstruction) as in an under river tube? Now he can't check underneath the car/from between cars. Multiply that by several other cars. Now he moves the train and it goes BIE again because he couldn't carefully check under the whole train. This is what we're up against as the T/O, Control Center and right up the line as we get into the decision makers. Also, looking in between the cars from inside a station, you can't get down in between cars because there are no steps, plus there is some piece of hardware protruding preventing one from even reaching the roadbed from the platform. Of course, the same is true if the train goes BIE in between stations and the t/o is walking the bench wall, he still can't get down in between cars from that way either. Just wait for the first 12-9 they have with these cars and the body is somewhere under the train and they can't find the body because it's SOMEWHERE! Police and Fire Department will call NYCT on the carpet about these cars. Enjoy them while you can, because sometime in 2024 they will be permanently relegated to the Rockaway Shuttle. Put that into your vaping pipes and smoke it!
  8. The Yardmaster assigns the cars . There are 3 eight hour shifts for yardmasters daily, Plus since transit a 24/7 business, there are many different yardmasters in the course of a week. Finally, the Division of Car Equipment makes the cars available because of maintenance requirements. Therefore whatever is available and released by CED (R46/R179) the yardmaster will assign. Bad performers or good performers are kept tracked of by CED, not the RTO Yardmaster.
  9. There are ZERO guarantees at MTA. If somebody says they will enter service at such and such a date and it doesn't happen, then y'all will have fits.
  10. The C has 8 car R160/179's. The train operator stops at the 8 car marker. 480 foot train, 60 foot cars. The R46's, also running on the C, are 8 cars long, but the train operator stops at the 10 car marker because each car is 75 feet long/600 foot train. Each car of an R211T is 60 feet long. But it is a 10 car train (two 5 car units) equaling a 600 foot train. So it will stop at the 10 car marker. In other words, the R46 and the R211T will stop at the same location at each station.
  11. Barriers were installed at Clark St. lines over this past weekend.
  12. Good. Those who complain that there is no shuttle service from 34th to Hunters Point can stick that in their pipe and smoke it, LOL! Obviously piggy backing GO's is a beautiful thing!
  13. Plus what is this doing in the Bus Photos and Videos section when there is no Bus Photo or Video here? MODERATOR: Please Lock Up This Discussion!
  14. You are making an assumption. 3594 & 3736 are retired when the fareboxes are removed and they are sent to ECH scrap lot. Has that been done yet? Plus why a new thread for this?
  15. That would be the first one of that group (2011) to be retired and I would blame the auto for crashing, going on fire with it spreading to the bus.
  16. I wouldn't call it a major accident if a few panels and a piece of bumper got replaced in one day!
  17. Let's wait and see what transit determines to be the cause.
  18. Re: 4068: Has this bus been physically seen or seen on bus time? Because those bus time thingies show the "wrong" bus. I regularly see the Q58 and have regularly/physically seen 4069 but not 4068.
  19. On time? LOL! If the Met bridge goes up for marine traffic there is a delay on the Q54. Metro Ave. is narrow 2 way street in Queens. Traffic (cars and trucks) regularly double park making one lane for 2 way traffic. Worse delays between Met/Cooper and Met/Hillside due to the traffic and double parking.
