I would think the purpose of public transportation is to provide transportation to students as well as other customers trying to get from point A to B. Kids don't have a choice of whether they would like to go to school or not, therefore they should be exempt from paying the fare. If the MTA were to suddenly revoke free transportation to public school students, it would spark outrage amongst parents and I'm sure it would have a very negative outcome. Not every family can afford paying $5.50 almost every day just to get their child to school - even more if the family includes several children. $5.50 x 180 = $990 per child every school year - money that some families don't have in today's economy.

Any word on what happened to that set that was involved in the train derailment last May? 5634-5635-5637-5636 has been in service for a while now but it seems 5742-5743-5745-5744 never returned.

I'm sure there is some sort of "computer system" that they used to keep track of them. As a matter of fact, I think that's what those stickers with the barcode are for seen at the ends of the cars by the car number (in the interior). Occasionally I've seen workers scan those stickers at terminals. I'm not exactly sure what they're used for but I'm sure it's for some sort of tracking system. (If you're not sure about what I'm referring to, the next time you're on a subway car look by the car number plate / sticker and there should be another white sticker near it that says something like "[Car number] A-Car ATI").

Wow. Looking through some stuff I said on this thread four years ago. I now realized that no one cared about what I was saying . (Page 230 and up, if anyone is interested).

I may as well point it out since no one is getting it. The sign reads " Southbound trains are running express from Bergen Street to Church Avenue". That's physically impossible as the can't switch to the express track before Bergen Street. This is unless the decides to skip Carroll Street and Smith-9 Street on the local track, but that wouldn't make any sense as the problem seems to be on the local track in the first place.

I made everything in MS Paint except for the font. The sign was animated with ezimba.com, then fixed with Microsoft GIF animator.
