Why is 103rd Street and 110th Street built with 4 tracks instead of the normal 2 track Upper Level Local-Lower Level Exp layout. I mean like the rest of the line above Grand Central-42nd Street is that layout...

That is a good question, Iamthe1.

 

Another interesting item is that after the Lexington Avenue I.R.T. widens out to a standard four track subway at 103d and 110th Streets, it returns to two levels at 116th Street then at 125th Street, the northbound local and express are on the upper level, while the southbound local and express are on the lower level.

 

Maybe it's a Lexington Avenue oddity like having stations at 51st, 68th and 77th Streets.

Topography. You build to the conditions of the terrain. The builders probably discovered different types of rock and soil, and underground streams, etc. in their way so they built over or around the obstructions where possible. That's my guess anyway. Lexington Avenue has many hills and dips from Grand Central heading uptown so the builders went with the flow it appears.

Another thing that's strange is at 125 St, in both directions (exp trains) stop on the (right side), and the (loc trains) stop on the (left side). Usually at most stations (exp stops on the left), and (loc stops on the right).

Technically [to avoid the lines crossing each other] the Lexington Av local could be set to run north via the Jerome and/or the WPR lines [which would require another designation like the (8)]. And the Lexington Av express via Pelham. But that would complicate things and disrupt the (2)/(5) set up where they share the same north [for the most part]-south terminals.

There was a plan to connect the Dyre Ave Line to the Pelham via the NYW&B right of way http://www.thejoekorner.com/lines/progforaction.htm. If that was the case today, then both the (5) and (6) would have ran as Lexington Express trains while the (4)<4> would run as a Lexington Local.

 

(5) Dyre Av to Flatbush Ave

(6) Pelham Bay Park to Utica Av

 

Not only that but since the (2) would run solely on the White Plains Line the <2> could now serve as an White Plains EXP.

It was built on two levels above 42nd St. because Lexington Ave. is narrower than most avenues in Manhattan. When the train moves from Park Ave. South to Lexington Ave. at 42nd St., afterwards it turns into a bi-level layout which reverts back at 103rd St. 116th St. is probably bilevel for the same reason the rest of the line above 42nd St. is, and 125th St. is bilevel in order to minimize switching after the 3 Lex lines split.

This is kinda related (express and local tracks, non-crossing lines, etc.), but as far as the Rockefeller Center southbound platform goes, was the flying junction north of the station and the non-grade crossover to the south placed to avoid a complex tangle of switches, junctions and crossovers in one place (north of the station) and to avoid delays, or would there just be too much tunneling done in one area that may have led to structural issues, or both or neither?

Well if that were the case, then you could set the Pelham/Dyre lines to the Lexington express tracks and have the lexington local go up the Jerome line [so the locals and express won't need to cross each other at 125th St].

4 to Pelham

5 to Dyre

6 to Woodlawn

 

And agreed about the 2 or they could have some 3s run to the Bronx if needed.
