553 Bridgeton Posted October 28, 2010 Share #5 Posted October 28, 2010 If you have a CDL Permit go to Community Coach in Paramus. They hire people there on the spot and they do Charter runs. The downside to it, is that they only pay $10.65/hr which is low for a Bus Driver if you ask me. And the other downside is that they dont want anyone with a CDL before hand, they want you to drive there way. There is another Charter Company in Trenton(I think) called Stouts, I heard they pay pretty good. As for Academy dont go there just as others stated, but if you can deal with bullshit then it wont be a problem. There is always Greyhound l0l which hires alot in the NY Region. jmazz77 Posted October 28, 2010 Share #6 Posted October 28, 2010 I wasn't saying go to Academy, just that they are hiring.. lol I went to their Perth Amboy location to fill out an application. While I was there, I overheard some other drivers talking.. One was complaining about how is check was short over $100 and it wasn't the first time.. The guy he was talking to was saying how he was there for 4 yrs & wasn't even making $14/hr. I got up and asked about the pay. Said it depends on the work. Typically from $11-14/hr. I tore up my app and walked out. Coach is the same way. I applied to greyhound twice since the summer & they never got back to me. Only way to apply is through Careerbuilder.com . There is also Omega. They are in Brooklyn. Google it. But I don't know if they are hiring or what the pay or management is like. I know their seats are really uncomfortable. Rode them once to D.C. as a passenger. TNT on Staten Island is hiring, but they require you to have previous charter experience. Again, don't know about pay, etc.. Just google "Charter Bus companies NYC" and you will get a few. Good Luck. I applied to Peter Pan/Bonanza, but right after they hired 19 drivers. If I don't hear back from them, I won't bother with Charter anymore.
sealteam1962 Posted October 28, 2010 Share #7 Posted October 28, 2010 you should try olympia trails-coach usa in bayonne nj they have the mega bus pay is 18.75 hr to start and need drivers now.omega in bklyn is run by russians hire only russian pay is low.tnt low pay.the private bus companies dont want to pay what a driver should get .it should like olympia and greyhound or peter pan 18.00 + these are the only compainies that pay good all the rest of them dont waste your time.but most of the good paying ones i think are full time.if you want part time you should go to the unemployment workforce in jamaica queens lots of school buses and other part time work its probaly your best bet to go there for work some jobs pay is ok others are not have to take what will suit your needs but you will have a job till whenever the mta starts calling again and who knows when that will happen hope this helps. But I've heard bad things about coach from a few people.. But if their starting pay is around $18/hr I would give them a try.
ML111 Posted October 30, 2010 Share #9 Posted October 30, 2010 academy is the worst tour bus outfit.low pay and the worst work.management fires you if you have someone complain about you. they have classes every week its a revoling door there dont waste your time trust me i know.they want you to report 5 am for a 7 am charter you dont get paid for those 2 hours.you make more money as a security guard then with them.:eek: In terms of working charter, it generally depends.... First off, if you work for a large outfit (Academy or Coach), you will deal with a lot of crap as many people have stated already. If you are looking to get your permit and for varying experience, go to Academy for this reason - you will not find a better training school for that kind of work. You can't expect with a stable of 500+ drivers to get anything near a good job - yes the airport work and yes to the shuttles. They do not pay well (the $11-14 is true), but having them on your resume usually helps with moving into other charter jobs....and yes, management is at times biased and plays favorites as to who gets what and job security is non-existent (particularly if you were not an "original" Academy driver, not Campus or Premier or the 100 other companies they finance. Coach USA has divested itself from the charter business. You can go to Paramus for school, but you will not work anything involving charters there. Mega.....it's hit or miss with them. $18.75 starting is not completely true, it depends on your experience/were you already a Coach USA driver transferring in. To say that "you get what you pay for" at times is a severe understatement. They have gotten a lot better in their operating practices, yes - but some of the things they do you have to shake your head. Believe me, some of my drivers were from Mega. Peter Pan - they picked up a good amount of charter work from Coach USA in the NYC Metro Area and are indeed hiring drivers (as of last month) - go to the Secaucus shop (upstairs dispatch office) and inquire. The starting rate however is definitely not $18 for charter. Depending on your preference, you can end up either as mainline PPB operating as a charter/X-board driver or with Bonanza on their X-Board. In terms of pay, Bonanza pays about 15% more than PPB. PPB starting hourly for charters at last recollection was around $12 and line run was $15 to start. Greyhound - two words: extra board. You will eat, breathe, and hope for sleep working 6 days on-call. However, really good, extensive training program. And starting salary now on line is $15 - but of course you will be sitting on protection most of the time, which is about $11 an hour (but you can make a lot of money if you play your cards right). As for other charter outfits who might be hiring, two quality operations would be DeCamp in Montclair, NJ and Classic Coach out in LI. A good outfit in Westchester is J & R and they have a good corporate account base for charters. NYAS/United Bus/World Wide (a.k.a. Jack's conglomerate company) is always hiring but don't expect much respect overall. In South Jersey, Starr is a good outfit and so is Stout's, but Stout's has slowed up as of late. In the Philly area, Krapf's is the best operation in the Delaware Valley and Philly Trolley is decent. Now, if ever you were interested in driving line run and have at least 3+ years of experience, you can also swing by Secaucus downstairs at Bolt. The hiring is extremely selective, however it never hurts to try - sliding scale pay is between $18-21. For those of you interested in applying (or about general career information for GLI, PPB or Bolt), send me a PM and I will point you in the right direction. BZGuy Posted October 30, 2010 Share #10 Posted October 30, 2010 Peter Pan - they picked up a good amount of charter work from Coach USA in the NYC Metro Area and are indeed hiring drivers (as of last month) - go to the Secaucus shop (upstairs dispatch office) and inquire. PPB starting hourly for charters at last recollection was around $12 and line run was $15 to start. We got told that Bonanza won't be hiring a new class of 6-8 people until April, but that may change as we have quite a few people out on medical and alot of drivers are refusing OT. We went through the summer shorthanded and now they started this war with Megabus on the NYC-Prov run with only one vacation relief/spareboard guy in NY and 4 spareboard in Providence who already have to cover normal vacations and bookoffs. So, Every Fri,Sat and Sun, I end up taking Providence passengers and bringing them out there at the end of my Hartford run. On top of the fact that BZ has been given alot of charter work as of late. I heard 15-20 guys got hired at PPB in Secaucus, but as usual I'll say 50% won't stay for whatever reason and they'll need to have another class at somepoint. If you have experience they usually start off at 2nd or 3rd year rates...one guy that came from "da Bridge" (Trans-Bridge) came in at top rate. And I'll agree with ML111, if you want line work, Bolt is the way to go. All express work with new Prevost's and at least they get to go 68mph! Secaucus hired 19.. That's what they said when I called. They told me not to bother going down, to just print & fill out an app and send it to the main office b/c it will just get sent there anyway.. So I sent it a 2nd time, this time with a tracking # so I know they got it. The lady on the phone told me the same thing.. Not all last, so I might get called in the future.. DOB2RTO Posted November 28, 2010 Share #12 Posted November 28, 2010 As alot of them told you it is true about those companies. I did work for Campus Coach for 5.6years, and worked closely with Academy, Peter Pan, etc. I did start out my ex-motorcoach career with Coach USA Red and Tan Lines. If you want experience, go to Academy, or Coach USA. You might be able to apply online with them also.....J&R Tours is another charter company...... http://www.academybus.com/AboutUs/CareerOpportunities.aspx http://www.coachusa.com/ftr.employment.search.asp http://www.buses.com/index.cfm
