I'm pretty young, I rode the subway ever since I could remember (about 1998).

As a toddler I lived near Bedford Park Blvd (C)(D), and I have a vivid picture of an R38 (C) train at Bedford Park Blvd. I remember because I used to be scared of the loud noise the train made once it hit the terminal. My grandmother lived in Coney Island so I used to take R68 (D) trains from BPB to C.I every Friday. I remember the R68 (B) trains, R44 (A) trains, R38's on the (C) (I never remember seeing a R32). Also the (D) train always used to race the (F) train fro, 47-50 Sts to 34 St. Coney Island always reminds me of the (B)(D)(F)(N) trains. (Good times :P) Also I rode redbirds on the (2)(4)(5)(6) as a kid. I always used to play with the rollsigns. Also I remember getting on a R62 (5) Once. (Prob. back in 99' or 00'). Also living near Bronx Park East (2)<5> I remember the brief period where R62's were on the (2). (Never rode one though :P). I remember the (9) train as a kid. Also the blackout where I just got off the (3) in 2003. The list goes on...

i agree, but only one problem. The R68/R68A's wont fit on the (J)(L)(M)(Z) lines because the length of those cars are longer. the R44, R46, R68 and R68A's are 75 feet long and the turns and curves on those lines (including the (L)) are too sharp. also, the train will actually touch the edges too. the only cars that would fit those lines are the 60 foot cars (for example: R32, R40, R40M, R42, R143 and R160), and maybe the 67 foot cars (R110B).

I don't think growing up in the 1970s and 1980s in NYC would have been fun with the subway. The random double letter routes stopping at different termini or running down different lines (such as "RJ" or "QB") and the public's image of the subway... combined with the fact that almost everything solid was covered in graffiti and it was extremely crime-ridden would make any newcomer to the subway turn right back around and take a taxi.

I think the 1990s was the peak period for the MTA - cheap fares payable with either MetroCard or tokens and most of the R3x series were still running. I remember seeing a train of Redbirds on my first trip to Manhattan.

70s and 80s was fun, too bad you missed it. See all the old stuff that is now all boarded up or torn down.

Seeing different models of trains old, new and very old.

Watching the 3rd ave EL in the BX.

90s was the beginning of our troubles, once Mayor G came in.

S/F,

CEYA!
