Subway Back Then, Compare To Now

My earliest REAL memories of the subway were back in 1993-1994. At the time, the only lines I had been on were the (1)(2), (4)<4>(5)(6), (A)(E), (J)(Mx)(Z). I didn't know anything about the subway at the time. I always thought it was a mysterious place, because I was forbidden from riding without adult supervision. I was a bus guy, so I was never pressed about riding it anyway. I think my first solo trip was a (J) to Manhattan so I could catch a few Westide Depot 8600 series RTS'. I was real anxious too! I loved the subway after that, but never got into the different car types or anything. I just knew I hated that slant!!! Lol!

Can anybody tell me what cars ran on those lines back then?

(4) R62s*

(A) R44, R32, R38

(E) R32

Eastern Div had R40S and R42s.

*I think that's what they had on the IRT.

The closest one I have is from summer 1980 and it's B.M.T. and IND. only. Maybe you'll still take a trip back and see the variety we had that summer?

Note: For some reason, I don't like the R10s on the CC

70(D) 40 R32 Brightliners; 140 R40 (Modified)/R42s; 96 R44s

70(E) 40 R10s; 20 R32 Brightliners; 48 R44s; 112 R46s

Note: I haven't ridden this train yet, but it only gets as close as Howard Beach in Queens (also an A and CC stop) and it only makes one stop in Brooklyn and in Queens.

I tried the (9) train once or twice. I wasn't too impressed that skip-stop service didn't begin until 137th Street and that stations weren't skipped equally.

(Actually, the (1) north of 110th Street, on average, has good spacing and especially north of 125th Street.)

I'm surprised that so many of you never rode the (9) train. When it ran, every other train was a (9) train!

That was the emergency car assignment due to the Rockwell truck problems.

By that September, everything had normalized, with all the R10's going back to the (C) and (G), and the 46's to the (E) and (F).

This is pretty much the assignment until the age of Manhattan Bridge changes and the GOH program changed everything for good.

The main changes inbetween were all of the 44's being pulled and sidelined for a couple of years (they swapped the trucks to use on the 46's), and then reappearing only on the (A) (with the P-wire setup removed and the current controllers and air valve installed, though not GOH'ed yet) in '83.

The 38's, after having briefly spread all over the south, then left for good, and also went solely on the (A), in'82.

The slant 40's spread to the (:), and then gradually to the entire south. In '83-84, they were just beginning to appear on the (D); just a couple a day. They were being displaced from the (A) by the return of the 44's.

  • 2 months later...

The first time i ever took the subway was back in the summer of 1997. I was only 6 years old back then, so i don't remember much, BUT, i do remember taking the 1 and 9 trains at my home stop which was 231st Street, then transferring to the L which had R42s when going to/from school every weekday. What a long trip 5 days a week. Moved to Co-op City next year and remember riding the redbirds on the 5 and 6 trains every once in a while. Those were the days. I was poor and did not have a camera back then. Oh well. At least i remember what i do. My friend lived near Avenue M on the Brighton Line. Remember transferring to the D or the Q at Atlantic Avenue to get to his house.
