MainStreetBound7 Posted February 24, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 24, 2011 Don't you think that the Transit Museum might run out of room soon for their cars. Yea you can just store some at 207th yard, or Coney yard for a while. But whats going to happen when they put the R38s,40s,42s, and 32s in there. If anything build, or find a new station that has 3 tracks. Give your opinon. B)
Fresh Pond Posted February 24, 2011 Share #2 Posted February 24, 2011 Somehow, someone in this thread is gonna bring up either up Hoyt-Schermerhorn or the Nassau St line between Chambers & Essex Sts. Eventually the TM is gonna run out of room and eventually we're (the TM) is gonna have to figure out where to put all of them
Eric Posted February 24, 2011 Share #3 Posted February 24, 2011 I was going to suggest the lower level at Bergen St, but that's a terrible idea.
Wallyhorse Posted February 24, 2011 Share #4 Posted February 24, 2011 I was going to suggest the lower level at Bergen St, but that's a terrible idea. Especially since at some point, the lower level of Bergen Street may very well see service again. Where it is now (the former Court Street Station) works, but sometime in the future, they might have to find space in a new location for all the cars, especially when the time comes to retire the R46's, R62's, R62A's and R68's among other cars. Vistausss Posted February 24, 2011 Share #7 Posted February 24, 2011 They could also use the lower level of 9th Avenue. It has 4 tracks and 2 platforms and only 1 platform is used once in a while for the garbage train. So that still makes 3 tracks to store. A lot of space there. Roadcruiser1 Posted February 24, 2011 Share #8 Posted February 24, 2011 Yeah, but who would go to Ninth Avenue just to see a train. We would need to put it somewhere were there would be a crowd or else it would lose money. I often suggested digging another level under the existing Court Street station. I once suggested that we put the trains in a building, but the electricity demand, the weight/length of the trains, and the tracks is just too much for any building. LRG Posted February 24, 2011 Share #9 Posted February 24, 2011 I don't see how an abandoned section of station could be used for museum displays other than the current New York Transit Museum. The fleet gets rotated from time to time so the same old thing never gets displayed year round (for the most part, that is).
Roadcruiser1 Posted February 24, 2011 Share #10 Posted February 24, 2011 Maybe we can extend the length, and the tunnels of the current Court Street platform just in case. With more trains that would soon be leaving, and new ones that would someday become old, and make their way in there we should have room just in case. LRG Posted February 24, 2011 Share #11 Posted February 24, 2011 Can't be done. There's a signal room at the west end of the station and crossovers as well. And extending the station eastward is too much of a hassle.

Or they could use 2nd ave, regular service there doesn't need 4 tracks. If anything just build a smaller station for regular service with only 2 or 3 tracks. Correction: Ninth Avenue lower level has three tracks, just like the upper level does. The problem however is that the middle track is used so garbage trains can access the refuse platform at 37th Street, so it must be vacant at all times. Yes, and garbage trains passing through the museum would not make a pretty sight. Okay. This topic's here. Might as well. My suggestion: the abandoned half of the Nassau line. Roadcruiser1 Posted February 24, 2011 Share #19 Posted February 24, 2011 How about the Myrtle Avenue station's upper level. Great place to put El cars, and cars that traditionally were on El's.
NX Express Posted February 24, 2011 Share #20 Posted February 24, 2011 How about the Myrtle Avenue station's upper level. Great place to put El cars, and cars that traditionally were on El's. 1. Elevated and exposed to the elements. 2. Damaged by fire (IIRC) 3. Deconstructed, only the structure remains. Need I go on?
Roadcruiser1 Posted February 24, 2011 Share #21 Posted February 24, 2011 I forgot it was damaged by a fire. At least it would be a good place if it wasn't damaged by a fire, not exposed to the elements, and not deconstructed, but it isn't.
harpomarx42 Posted February 24, 2011 Share #22 Posted February 24, 2011 I thought it would be interesting to take an old subway car and turn it into a garden, with plants and flowers growing in, out, and around. Obviously, there are drawbacks as to location and what some might use it for, but it's a great conversation piece.
