Magnitude 8.9 earthquake rocks Japan

Jebus this is so bad. They have had like 250+ aftershocks, a bunch of which have been 4.0-6.0 in strength. Yes, the buildings away from the tsunami are not rubble, but they are running out of food, water, large parts of the country have no electricity, fuel supplies also running very low.

Just imagine sleeping in some school gym or auditorium and running low on food and water and no lights or heat (it's winter there too), and constantly being shook by over two-hundred-eighty-seven aftershocks from 4.0 to 7.1 on the richter scale since friday.

At least one city has been washed off the coastline by the 33 foot wall of ocean that came inland up to a mile or 2.

And again, the quake was revised by the japanese meteorological dept, which oversees such activity (here it would be NOAA & USGS) to 9.0, the pacific tsunami warning center has it revised up as a 9.1 making it the 3rd biggest quake in recorded history.

I feel really bad for Japan, and again since people are asking what the strongest earthquake in recorded history was at what magnitude it was a magnitude 9.5. It happened at Chile during the year 1960 at a city called Valdivia. Thus it is called the 1960 Valdivia Earthquake. That was also a megathrust earthquake like the one that happened in Japan which we are taking about. Now most people must be asking what is a megathrust earthquake. It is an earthquake that happens only at a subduction zone.

A subduction zone is where a continental plate is sinking underneath another one. When the sinking plate get's stuck it causes a massive amount of stress on the plate that isn't sinking. This amount of stress would build and build until the strain is released, and since this happens mostly underwater it would generate a massive tsunami by lifting the entire water column. Tsunamis aren't normal waves that you can surf, or dive under.

These waves are massive, and they sweep in creating a high tide that won't go down. It would follow by a second level of waves that increases the tide level, and it keeps on doing it, and once it does this it won't go down to normal sea level for about 10 minutes. If you are caught by this wave you would most likely be dead when they find you. Also megathrust earthquakes are able to last about 5 minutes.

That is 3 times longer then a normal earthquake, and is often 2 magnitudes higher then normal earthquakes which would usually hit magnitude 7. Thus megathrust earthquakes generate some of the strongest earthquakes in recorded history.

This is a picture of a subduction zone.

If anyone here wants to know something cool the Japanese Earthquake of 2011 which is now a magnitude 9.0 shifted the Earth's axis by 8 centimeters. That sped up time on Earth by 1.6 microseconds.

Bad news is some 10,000+ people could be dead from this earthquake, and an entire village has been wiped out which leads to this high death toll.

Information on viewing TV Japan on digital cable.

http://www.tvjapan.net/en/watching/cabletv_result.php?list=true&country=USA&

In the philadelphia market it's being carried by another network on channel 265.

This quake is basically turning into a massive destabilization of the tectonic plate boundary in this region, with another large quake of 7.0 or up possible. Also at risk is this event triggering the other fault that intersects here, which would likely be about the same power as the original 9.0/9.1 that hit last week.

By the way, the reactors operate at 518 degrees Fahrenheit, but when left uncovered by coolant, it can quickly reach 2200 degrees and the core just liquefies under its own radiation heat.

The same kind of heat has been keeping our earth's core molten hot a billion years after mars' core solidified. The core is heavy elements such as uranium and lead as well as monumental amounts of gold and silver.

My heart is so sad for Japan and all the people over there. I hope that things don't get any worse where the explosions at the Nuclear Plants are concerned. The last thing they are anyplace around the world needs is another Chernobyl.

The plants are holding well. As long as they keep pumping in seawater to cool the rods. This however would release radioactive steam. Which is why there are so many worries. Another thing is although the seawater would cool the reactor so they could shut it down. It might never come back online. The seawater would rust the reactor, and since the plant is 30 years old, and would require this much seawater the plant might not survive, and would have to be shut down unless if they build new reactors of course.

Corrected. Flooding a reactor with seawater is always a last-ditch effort to prevent a meltdown. It will be uneconomical to repair them, so they will be written off.

And the Japanese are bacteria?

no HUMANS are bacteria. We are a disease that plagues the earth. We consume more than we need to, we destroy everything in our path. When we fill one land mass to the gills we spread to another till that one can no longer sustain us.

Listen throughout the history of mankind I have read a majority of non beneficial things that mankind have done. It's best that humans are wiped off the planet by some sort of asteroid impact or something. Man has done nothing, but pollute, take, and never give back to the planet, to another person, and just hurts others. Throughout history we persecute people for their skin color, their religion, and their looks. What have we done that was beneficial. We do nothing, but hurt the environment. We do nothing, but wipe out other animal species like the Dodo Bird. Hell there are people that beat, rape, abuse, and kill children like they are nothing. We invent different and more powerful weapons like nuclear bombs to efficiently kill each OTHER.

We do nothing, but sit on our lazy as* all day while another person of our same species are dying. We kill each other even though we are all humans. Yet we never think about what we do. We do nothing, but drink beer, use drugs, or smoke which hurts friends, and family. We tease people because of their gender or their sexuality. What have we done that helped the world. We do nothing but murder, rape, steal, and kill from each other. Look at all the genocides, and the mass killings that happen. Do animals like dogs typically kill, rape, or steal from one another NO. Dogs know how to behave better then mankind. If a dog can be better then us then are we the best species NO.

You make it sound like all humans are bad,not everyone is a murderer a rapists and a stealer,a drinker and a drug user.and we get tease we stand for are self's and some do protect the environment, mankind has there good's and bad's but don't deserve to be wipe out.

No I just lost my temper a bit back there sorry. Shouldn't have cracked my whip like that. I do know that man has done some good things yet we need to do more. We need to improve. We need to reduce the amount of dirt (criminals) that exist by solving social, economical, and problematic issues. That is the solution.

Hey don't make fun of me for that. At least that is an idea. I don't see you coming up with anything better unless if you want to run a 5 mile tunnel from Manhattan to Staten Island which would most likely kill the (MTA)'s budget. Anyway back on topic.

From CNN.com

Tokyo (CNN) -- A powerful earthquake struck Japan on Thursday, triggering a tsunami warning for one prefecture and advisories in others.

The warning and advisories were lifted by about 90 minutes later, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The quake was closer to the Japanese coast than last month's 9.0-magnitude quake.

There were no reports of casualties from anywhere in the earthquake zone, the National Police Agency said.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake was a magnitude 7.4. The U.S. Geological Survey said it was 7.1.

Workers evacuated the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant following the quake, the Tokyo Electric Power Company said. The company said it has communication with the plant and the power is still on there. There were no immediate reports of damage, it said.

The quake's epicenter was off the coast of Miyagi in northeastern Japan, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered 41 miles (66 kilometers) from Sendai -- one of the areas worst hit by last month's 9.0-magnitude quake -- and 73 miles (118 kilometers) from Fukushima, where a crisis has been under way at the nuclear plant since last month's tsunami.

Public broadcaster NHK reported a tsunami warning for Miyagi prefecture, saying people in that area should evacuate away from the shore to a safe place.

NHK also reported tsunami advisories for the Pacific coast of Aomori Prefecture, and for the Iwate, Fukushima, and Ibaraki Prefectures.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said based on all available data, "a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is not a tsunami threat to Hawaii."

The quake was centered 207 miles (333 kilometers) from Tokyo, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

It was 30.4 miles (49 kilometers) deep, the agency reported. The Japanese Meteorological Agency estimated the depth as 60 kilometers.

The earthquake took place shortly after 11:30 p.m. (10:30 a.m. ET).
