(N) Local in Brooklyn to Canal St via Montague Tubes and Downtown Brooklyn

 

(N) runs in two sections:

Ditmars Boulevard-34th Street

Canal Street (Tunnel Level)-Coney Island

 

If the SAS is running, (Q) operates between 96th Street-2nd Avenue and 34th Street ONLY, otherwise is suspended.

 

(R) runs in two sections:

71st-Continental to 34th Street

Canal Street (Tunnel Level)-95th Street/Bay Ridge (some trains begin and end at Whitehall Street).

Can anyone explain to me how trains are turning at Canal Street from Brooklyn going back to Brooklyn?

There are switches south of the (R) Canal St platform allowing for this type of turning. It's pretty ineffective but in such a situation this could be a vital link to other Manhattan lines.

But imagine how much work it would be to turn the train: pull in to northbound platform, reverse into a middle track, reverse to southbound platform, reverse towards Brooklyn. It would also assume the tracks aren’t being used for storage at the time.

 

I actually like this:

(M) is re-routed after Essex Street via the (J) to Broad Street, then via Montauge and then via the (Q) to Coney Island, replacing the latter in Brooklyn.

Here goes:

It can take the place of the (R) up to Canal Street while the Broadway Line is closed from 34 Street–Herald Square to South Ferry–Whitehall Street. Nostalgia for those old enough to remember the (M) normally running down the Brighton Line.

That train operator must be dead. The physics to make that possible would kill everyone on the train! And it would involve multiple failures such as signals not properly preventing the train from moving too fast into the station.

Well it was a track fire + blackout + broken rail + rail condition + terrosim + earthquake + tsunmai.

And total negligence since the MTA let trains run through there during a disaster. And if there is a blackout, I’d assume the electricity would be out, which means the trains don’t move. Tsunamis can be forecast, and so can earthquakes.

 

Maybe the terrorists were in control of the train, signals, and they sent someone to provide backup power generators to the tracks at 36 Street? That’s a lot of work to put a station out for 5 months and kill a train and/or station full of people.

(C) runs 205 St-Euclid Av via Concourse line using some trains from Concourse Yard

(E) runs via 6 Av Local switching to 8 Av Local at W 4th St

(B) Suspended

(D) runs 96 St-Coney Island exclusively using trains from Coney Island Yard

(F) runs normally

(M) runs Metropolitan Av-Chambers Street to free up space on 6 Av for the (E)

Run extra (Q) and (R) trains.

 

(B) service runs from Norwood–205 Street to 2 Avenue via 8 Avenue local. Its normal route is pretty much covered by the (N), (Q), (R), and (W) up to 57 Street–7 Avenue. Transfer to the (Q) at Times Square–42 Street or (D) at West 4 Street–Washington Square for the remainder of the route.

 

(D) service runs from 42 Street–Bryant Park to Coney Island–Stillwell Avenue. The rest of its route is covered by the (B). For 7 Avenue, transfer to any of the Broadway routes at 34 Street–Herald Square.

 

(E) service diverted via 6 Avenue from 5 Avenue/53 Street to West 4 Street–Washington Square. Take the (R) for 57 Street–7 Avenue, 49 Street, and Times Square–42 Street. Times Square–42 Street is also covered by the (7). Stations in between 42 Street–Port Authority Bus Terminal and West 4 Street–Washington Square are covered by the (A), (B), and (C); transfer to them at West 4 Street–Washington Square.

 

(M) service is diverted to Chambers Street. For stations along the normal route, transfer at Canal Street to and of the Broadway routes which serve nearby stations from Prince Street to 5 Avenue. The (R) takes over from Queens Plaza to Forest Hills–71 Avenue. For express stations along Queens Boulevard, transfer to the (F) at Delancey Street–Essex Street.

Track fire at West 4 Street–Washington Square due to some crazy homeless woman throwing burning gasoline-soaked garbage into the tunnels right where the switches are. Visibility is a problem in the tunnels and station on both levels and so West 4 Street–Washington Square is out of commission. A newly radicalized terrorist happened to have seen it and decided to copy the woman’s example. He dragged a waste bin from the streets above, set the contents on fire and tossed the contents onto the tracks at 8 Street–NYU, a nearby station. Fire and smoke took over the southern end of the southbound platform and tracks. Out of an abundance of caution, the entire station had been put out of service with no trains going through it. Personnel is being dispatched to take care of the problems and assess the damages.

Interesting you keep the Steinway (42nd Street) tunnels plus Joralemon, Cranberry, Rutgers and 53rd open in this scenario.  This scenario assumes the SAS has OPENED by the time this happens:

 

(2) runs 241st Street to 14th Street (normal route)

(3) runs 148th Street-South Ferry (local south of Times Square)

Shuttle runs on 7th Avenue express tracks between Chambers Street and Wall Street

 

(4) runs all times to New Lots Avenue

(5) runs all times to Flatbush Avenue

 

(B) runs at all times and replaces the (Q) as the Coney Island local in Brooklyn

 

(F) runs with trains from Coney Island running EITHER:

Via the Crosstown to 179th Street

Via 53rd Street to 179th Street

Normal route to 57th Street-6th Avenue, then via the (Q) to 96th Street-2nd Avenue

(One-third of trains operate each route)

Shuttle buses operate between Queens Plaza and 63rd Street-Lexington Avenue, stopping at Court Square but skipping Roosevelt Island (which is closed).

(G) is extended to 71st Street-Continental Avenue to replace lost local service on Queens Boulevard

 

(L) runs Bedford Avenue-Rockaway Parkway (some trains begin/end at Lorimer Street)

If there are sufficient (L) trains in Manhattan, then a shuttle can run between 1st and 8th Avenues (single-tracked east of Union Square)

 

(M) service is split with alternating trains running between Metropolitan Avenue and EITHER 71st-Continental OR 96th Street-2nd Avenue (one-half of trains runs each route)

 

(R) is split as follows:

One-third of trains running normal route between 95th Street-Bay Ridge and 71st-Continental, but via the Bridge in Manhattan.

One-third of trains running between 95th Street-Bay Ridge and Court Street ONLY

One-third of trains running between Whitehall Street and 71st-Continental

 

(W) runs normal route in Manhattan.

Yeah, it's not the best way to do it, but it does provide service along the stretch between Whitehall and Canal that some people are looking for, especially those looking for the World Trade Center.

This version does not abandon any lines.

 

(A) is local throughout and is split running full-time between Far Rockaway and Rockaway Park on most likely a 4/3 split during the day (four to Far Rockaway for every three to Rockaway Park) and running every 15 minutes (split evenly between Far Rockaway and Rockaway Park) late nights.

 

(D) runs as it does now EXCEPT for NO peak-direction service in the Bronx.

 

(E) is extended to Lefferts Boulevard at ALL TIMES.  Trains run local at all times EXCEPT rush hours, when such trains run on the express track and skip 23rd and Spring Street in Manhattan and then run express in Brooklyn.  

Rush hours, a LIMITED number of (E) trains terminate at Chambers Street and are local in Manhattan (such have the <E> designation).

 

(F) service is reduced by one-third to Manhattan, one third of (F) trains run via the crosstown between Roosevelt Avenue (stopping at Queens Plaza) and Bergen Street.

 

(J) runs 24/7 between Jamaica Center and 95th Street-Bay Ridge

 

(K) runs as a 2 TPH supplement on the 8th Avenue line between Chambers Street and 168th Street in Manhattan except late nights (when the Chambers Street-WTC platform is CLOSED).

 

Franklin Avenue (S) is replaced by buses.
