NX Express Posted August 27, 2012 Share #176 Posted August 27, 2012 The subway is a necessity, especially for people with PPR Metrocards who only use it to get to/from work. Thus, they won't be inclined to take the subway more (since they have to pay for it).
CenSin Posted August 27, 2012 Share #177 Posted August 27, 2012 Which can turn out in happier travelers = happy to take the subway more often and can turn out in more travelers. Both of 'em create profit so part of the costs for running that extra crew is covered already in the profit it'll give 'em. revenue ≠ profit The MTA loses money on all of its operations, which is why there must be tax-based funding. realizm Posted August 27, 2012 Share #178 Posted August 27, 2012 They should be running the more frequently on weekends. Via the 60th Street tunnel. They have the capacity. They have the cars. So why aren't they already doing it? Because the MTA doesn't have the money? Because they don't want to? Unfortunately. That's the reason I guess. Otherwise as you stated increased service would be the best solution.
RtrainBlues Posted August 28, 2012 Share #179 Posted August 28, 2012 The R shares tracks with many other trains in Bklyn, Manhattan and Queens. There is always something going on with at least one of those other trains every weekend, making it impossible to run the R more frequently than every 10 minutes. This upcoming weekend, it's Brooklyn that's causing the problem - R, N and D trains all run express from 36th to Atlantic, and then Atlantic to Canal. Most weekends in September, it's Manhattan that's causing the problem - R, N and Q trains are all running express from 34th to 14th, and then 14th to Canal. And don't forget all the weekends where there's track work on Queens Blvd (either E, F and R all running local or all running express for a portion of their routes.) The subway system would come to a complete standstill if the R ran more frequently than every 10 minutes on weekends. Slower speeds, increased time for rerouting announcements, track workers on the tracks, etc. It's a real nightmare. Be lucky they have it every 10 minutes. It used to be every 12 minutes on a "supplement schedule" for just about every weekend in the years 2008, 2009, etc.
