Why not more artics on MTA buses?

If the MTA really cared enough, the Q46 and Q43 would be perfect for double deckers, because unlike most routes with arctics most people on the Q46 and Q43 are in it for the long haul, so the upper deck would actually be well-utilized. That's another story for another time, though.

Q46 could use artics. The Q43 really needs better headway management more than anything else, though - buses travel like snails from Jamaica Station to 179th St, and at 179th St there will either be two or three buses at a time, or nothing at all.

No They wouldn't actually..... The MTA does not have an infrastructure to house, fuel, or maintain double deckers throughout the system at most depots.

Staten Island has a double-bus system where they have two buses of the same line depart within a minute or two of each other to handle excessive crowds. At st George sometimes it is three buses with two ltds one lcl or two lcls one ltd. Throughout midday some routes see heavy usage towards the ferry and others both directions such as the s48 and s53. Those routes would probably run every 15 minutes with articulated buses but there would not be anyone stuffing onto an already stuffed bus because the next one is 12 minutes away.

Castleton and Yukon should have a small dedicated fleet of artics, I would say between 10-20 each.

Regarding artics and Staten Island, maybe(?) a fifth depot ala Meredith could be built SPECIFICALLY and ONLY for artics. But WHERE?

Will Meredith be rebuilt by the MTA after the hurricane? It's essentially right on the water. SI has plenty of open space, so I'd guess if they were doing a new depot for articulated buses (or even just re-do a 45-footer lot), they'd pick somewhere further inland.

I think he was referring to which lines you'd put them on, which is another way of asking which lines see the most crowds (which TBH, he should already know by now).
