"A federal grand jury has indicted Roger Clemens on charges of obstruction of justice, making false statements to Congress and perjury about his use of performance-enhancing drugs.

Clemens faces up to 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine if convicted of all the charges.

"Our government cannot function if witnesses are not held accountable for false statements made before Congress," said United States Attorney Ronald Machen. "Today the message is clear: If a witness makes a choice to ignore his or her obligation to testify honestly, there will be consequences."

Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award-winner and his former trainer, Brian McNamee, testified under oath before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in February of 2008. McNamee, who cooperated with federal authorities and with baseball's Mitchell report on performance-enhancing drugs in baseball, said Clemens had used steroids, while Clemens denied having ever used them.

The contradictory statements led to a investigation by the Justice Department that has lasted two-and-a-half years. A federal grand jury convened in Washington has heard testimony from dozens of people in the case for at least 18 months and only last week, McNamee's lawyers were contacted about wrapping up loose ends in the case."

Forget the legal problems. This situation will only make hit harder for him and Barry Bonds who were already HOF's before this suspected situation, to make it to Cooperstown.

they should be fired from sports as well

I know you a hardcore Consertative Foxie but what about MLB Boss Bud Selig and most of the MLB Owners who looked the 'other way." Ditto for now former MLB Players Union Chief Donald Fehr.

MLB people let the juice era slide until public reaction turned against them as this was ploy to get fans in the few years following the 1994/95 strike.:tdown:

This is the last thing congress needs to worry about. Lets let the MLB club worry about it and deal with it instead of wasting our tax dollars on this BS! Congress needs to worry about real important pressing matters affecting our nation. NOT SPORTS VIOLATIONS!

It does make for great drama. The Clemens hearing was among the highest rated events in C-Span's TV history.

How is it that Canseco AND McGwire have jobs as coaches in the majors, again ????

(bench coach, hitting coach, respectively)

far as Clemens goes, I don't feel sorry for the poor fool....

Remember HE'S the one that wanted congress involved in this... ppl. are forgetting that...

He wanted to prove to McNamee (and the rest of the baseball world, at least) that he was innocent...

This is like a drug dealer (whose supposed mule has been arrested for possession) walking into a police precinct (even taking it to the media) to claim how he's never sold drugs in his life, etc etc....

...thing is, if the police, the feds, whoever, find any evidence of drugs (or there ever having been drug activity) in that house/spot, that guy's pretty much f**ked....

Same shit that's gonna happen to Clemens if he's convicted...

Basically snitched on himself... he would have NO one else to blame but himself if he ends up spending time in jail....

talk about being your own judge, jury, and executioner....

Canseco's job bro is not MLB affliated. While McGuire had to kiss a@@ and cry like he was a little boy confessing to his mama in stealing candy in a press conference in admitting he took PED's before he was able to hold on to his coaching job w/ LaRussa and the cards. Not condoning it but trying to give some logic why?

Another example of why I really dislike Bud Selig as MLB chief. 1 player did it and is now an employee of an MLB club. While a certain Hall of Famer Pitcher before this crap life is now in ruin and may never see even the city limits of Cooperstown except as a visitor.;)

Andy was smart to outright admit to something. That's going to help him. Roger continuing to deny isn't going to help him.

=

As far as using drugs to help improve themselves to disqualify them from the HOF, I still think what Pete Rose did with gambling is like nothing and Rose should be in the HOF based on his records.

On ARod - not sure, but if he said what he said and if that's true, I don't think those few years should ban him from the HOF. But it really is a grey line invovling cheats.

In the steroid era, you have to give players like Mussina at least some benefit of the doubt concidering what he faced and in the AL East.

I would be shocked if the "Rocket" got 30 years:eek:. If he did get any jail time IMO it would along lines of another disgraced PED user and track and field star Marion Jones of about at most 1-2 years.

or maybe it will just be another lindsey lohan thing 20 something days in jail and then kick em out for real criminals
