Subway - What If?

VWM

Ignoring the vague scenario...

Subway service must be suspended in the Cranberry Tube for 1 year. This a long term scenario, and Rutgers cannot handle the (A), (C), and (F). (And the (M) after Broadway-Lafayette)

Make reasonable changes.

(A): Runs in two sections:

Between 207th Street and Chambers Street, World Trade Center, or Fulton Street.

Between High Street and Lefferts Boulevard - Howard Beach/JFK.

(C): Via Rutgers Street Line.

And how will all those manhattan bound riders on that G during the AM rush get into town? Ferry?

Don't say "Transfer to the E at queens plaza" because there isn't enough capacity on those trains in the AM. QBL is a very busy line.

Um, if they are looking for Midtown, there is also the (7) at Court Square.

This would also effect the (B)(D) and (N)(Q), so here goes

(B) Ends early

(D) Via 8th Ave Local, southbound trains to CI via Culver

(E) Suspended

(F) CI-Roosevelt Island (Every other CI-bound train turns at Kings Highway due to capacity issues at CI)

(M) Shuttle starts early

(N) 5th Ave-CI

(Q) Service to Astoria ends early

(R) Bay Ridge-5th Ave

(S) Queensboro Plaza-Astoria

(7) Bypasses 74th St due to crowding issues

EDIT: 42nd St (S) Runs overnight along with extra service to accommodate Broadway Line customers going to Lexington Avenue

Q60 buses will be running twice as often at all times, and run to PABT via 53rd St.

The Q102 will also run twice as often, at all times

SHUTTLE BUSES:

Express shuttle bus stopping at all (F) line stops east of 71st St, Jamaica Van Wyck, and Roosevelt Island

Local shuttle bus stopping at all (R) line stops, 21st Street-Queensbridge, and Lexington Avenue 59th Street

NEXT: Emergency work is needed on the Clark St Tubes (2, 3 tubes) that will take about 4-5 months. No trains can run between Fulton St and Borough Hall at this time. Reroute the (2) and (3).

(2) via Lex express at all times

(3) 148 St to Chambers via express, nights via local

(4) via local in Brooklyn to New Lots all times

(5) is just there lol

Broadway FASTrack (or however you spell it) work will require partial shut down of the line for 3 weeks.

There will be no train service between 57/7 and Canal St (both levels).

Reroute (N)(Q)(R) trains accordingly. This will be during the week as well, not just weekends/late nights.

-A

P.S. The 57/7 station itself will be open and *can* be used to terminate/turn back trains since there are switches north and south of the station.

A new connection north of Fulton Street is built and (2) and (3) trains terminate there,  Some (2) and (3) trains run via the (1) to South Ferry (Late Nights: (3) runs as it does now).

(4) runs to New Lots Avenue and (5) runs to Flatbush Avenue at ALL TIMES ( (5) remains express late nights).  Single-track shuttle trains run between Hoyt and Nevins Street, also at all times (local rush hours).

When there is enough capacity south of Brooklyn Bridge, (6) is extended to Brooklyn, alternating between Utica and Flatbush Avenue and running express in Brooklyn.

A special (10) train runs on the express track in Brooklyn between Atlantic Avenue and Utica Avenue when there is not enough capacity to extend the (6) to Brooklyn.

What's the point of switching the (2) and (5)'s  northern terminals. It doesn't make a difference.

Not possible...

Due to Hurricane Barry (which made landfall in New York as a Category 1), the IRT Flushing Line from Times Square - 42nd Street to Vernon Blvd. - Jackson Ave is impassable due to floodwater. What would you do?

(7) and <7> trains run from Hunters Pt. Ave to Flushing.

The Dyre Ave Branch sees less ridership than the branch to 241st. Since the (2) would not continue to Brooklyn, it would make sense that is runs on the less ridden branch.

  • 2 weeks later...

Due to a suspicious tower fire, the Hoyt-Schermerhorn interlocking is out of service for several weeks. What this means is no (A)(C)(F)(G) trains throughout that triangle between Jay/Metrotech, Hoyt-Schermerhorn Sts & Bergen St stations.

Reroute accordingly.

Since we now know the Montague tunnel will be closed for 12-14 months (starting in August), I'm going to do this with the assumption that is also out:

(M) is reduced to the shuttle between Myrtle and Metropolitan Avenue at all times.

(G) runs in two parts:

Single track shuttle between Fulton Street and Clinton-Washington Avenues

Bedford-Nostrand Avenue to 71st-Continental (replacing the (M) after Court Square).

(A) runs in four sections:

207th Street-Chambers Street, Manhattan

Single-track shuttles between Chambers Street and High Street

Single-track shuttle between Lafayette Avenue and Utica Avenue

Utica Avenue to Lefferts Boulevard or Far Rockaway

Shuttle buses run between High Street and Utica Avenue in Brooklyn.

(C) is re-routed to the (M) after West 4th and runs to the Broadway Junction (J) platform, where it terminates (and during this time runs 24/7).  It is requested during this time if possible to use the (C) or (J) to Broadway Junction and there for (A) service to Utica Avenue or Lefferts/Rockaways

(F) runs in two sections:

179th Street, Queens-York Street, Brooklyn.

Smith-9th Streets-Coney Island, Brooklyn.

Tropical Storm Dorian had flooded Van Cortlandt Park station while it was weakening over New York. The entire IRT White Plains Road Line is also affected. What would you do?

(1) 238 St to South Ferry

(2) Flatbush Av to 137 St-CC

(5) Flatbush Av to 149-Concourse, E 180 St to Dyre Av

I don't know if NYCRailfan specified if East 180 was part of the damage, assuming FP is having the (5) shuttle run. I like your method FP, but I would alter it somewhat:

I'd have the Manhattan-Brooklyn portion of the  (5) terminate on the upper level of 149-Concourse, middle track so not to disturb the (4).

That would leave room for the (2) to terminate at the lower level of 149, and then relay over the switches before 3 Av. I don't know if the (3) can handle Lenox all by itself during the weekday rush hours.

And of course the obligatory shuttle buses between Wakefield and Mott-Haven.
