Kamen Rider Posted February 14, 2013 Share #29 Posted February 14, 2013 Then what ever happened to the polo grounds shuttle and 159 st yard? Yes, what ever happened to a line that closed and was demolished 50 years ago... Kendal, do you actually bother to look this stuff up before you as? It's not exactly rocket science to use google. Vistausss Posted February 14, 2013 Share #30 Posted February 14, 2013 Not everything is demolished. For example, Sedgewick Avenue is still there even though it's partially covered by the Major Deegan Expressway. And Anderson Ave is partially there too if you're willing to go through the scary tunnel and actually use a flashlight (the covered part) and walk your way through bushes on top of a building (the non-covered part). Quill Depot Posted February 14, 2013 Share #33 Posted February 14, 2013 Sometimes, history isn't recorded in direct sight. Look down further and find it.

traildriver Posted March 18, 2013 Share #37 Posted March 18, 2013 it's correct in that the information isn't wrong, just lacking. For example, there is no mention of the Playland specials to the Rockaways using that platform. yes, they were one of the akward moments in the history of the subway, but they still existed. There were also Football specials that used the station from what I've read, (forgot to mention them before) When the New York Jets were first formed, they were known as the "New York Titans", and played at the Polo Grounds in upper manhattan. The subway ran trains from the end of the Queens Blvd line to 42nd lower, where they made the station stop, and then somehow relayed and reveresed north to 155th on the Concourse line. http://books.google.com/books?id=6WFHNSXBpocC&pg=PA295&lpg=PA295&dq=football+NY+titans+subway+special&source=bl&ots=8U7RCSwRvR&sig=D-Uk7fjnpVIZbyVGnMGJUT017cU&hl=en&sa=X&ei=F10IUYSEDIPf0gGQ0oCIBA&ved=0CC0Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=football%20NY%20titans%20subway%20special&f=false This 'S' Special rings some kind of bell in my ancient memory.....i vaguely recall boarding an 'S' Special in Jamaica, running to 42nd street, and reversing direction and ending at Yankee Stadium. Can't recall if it was for a baseball or football game, but I believe there was a second motorman aboard to facilitate the reversal of direction....
