The R40 slant will retire in the summer of 2009.

Based on observations, it may be true that the slants will retire around the second quarter of this year, however, we cannnot be 100% of that and remember, not every MTA worker tells the truth. While it may be truth, this is a very sensitive topic, everything here is subject to change.

Im sort of a newbie, but are these r40s different than the ones the A line uses?

actually there is, the ones that run on the (B) is R40 slants while those on the (A) are R40A slants. R40s were not originally built air-conditioning while R40As were. that is why the pole arrangment is a straight line on an R40 while diagnal on an R40A. the R40Ms on the (E) are part of the R40A order

The last 100 of this R40A order had modified ends built because the TA didn't want to deal with the sloped ends, that it was a danger to the riders. Something along those lines.

Thanks for the info, interesting stuff. I do hope they get rid of the R40As though.

I thought you meant the slanted R40As.

the R40A order consists of all 100 R40Ms and last 100 R40 slants. i am used to these cars because they have always been on the Brighton Line since 1997. R40 slants are very fast, but yeah, they are in deteriorating shape and will be retired soon. at least the interiors look better than the R42s.
