E For Erica Posted September 1, 2013 Share #1 Posted September 1, 2013 Last time I checked the R46s have until 2015 but I was wondering if that changed. And if so , what year DO they retire. what train will be the last line with them ? And what will they be replaced by ? Growing up the R46s were my most favorite cars and the subway will not not be the same when they retire.
RollOver Posted September 1, 2013 Share #2 Posted September 1, 2013 The R46s will be replaced by the R211s beginning in 2019 or so. They will approach 40 years of age in 2015. They have about 7-8 more years.

DJ MC Posted September 1, 2013 Share #4 Posted September 1, 2013 Oh ok. They will also receive an SMS, which will keep then in service until the R211s begin arriving by the end of this decade.

Like how they SMSed them in 2008 right ?They did a good job back then they came out smoove , shiny and the new floors & seats looked nice. My friend who came from california one day thought the 46 was a new tech. And do they still run the R46s with the new floors & blue seats ? Q43LTD Posted September 4, 2013 Share #11 Posted September 4, 2013 I didn't know the 46's were that old. I thought they were a lot younger than that.
RollOver Posted September 4, 2013 Share #12 Posted September 4, 2013 I didn't know the 46's were that old. I thought they were a lot younger than that. They're about 35-38 years old now...as they were built between 1975 and 1978. To me, they actually still look a lot young IMO.
Fresh Pond Posted September 4, 2013 Share #13 Posted September 4, 2013 I know some of them have the blue seats, but I forgot which numbers. It was done as needed...you'll find some sets with all blue seats, some without them, and even some with blue seats and regular seats in the same car
Orion8 Posted September 5, 2013 Share #14 Posted September 5, 2013 A while...probably 2019 considering they run great
4P3607 Posted September 5, 2013 Share #15 Posted September 5, 2013 5666-5667-5669-5668 has blue seats. Remember, those cars were plauged with problems during the first half of their life. They practically had to be completely rebuilt at one point, so they don't really seem that old. (They are starting to show their age, the bucking and the fix-all duct tape.)
