Wallyhorse Posted November 5, 2015 Share #7 Posted November 5, 2015 Indeed I remember the R17's on the and the R21/22 on the tho they were never Red. I don't remember R17s much on the at all. Those I remember at one point made up almost ALL of the entire fleet on the and there were also such on the and later the . The R21/22 I remember mainly on the and and also to a lesser degree on the and

TransitJusticeForAll Posted November 5, 2015 Share #9 Posted November 5, 2015 Yes. Especially back in the 90s, Redbirds ruled the Line

The R21/22 I remember mainly on the and and also to a lesser degree on the and R17s had the circle windows right? This was late 80's 1987,88-ish.I rode them on for sure. The was my home line so I remember the r21/r22 forsure. As for the 90's R26,28 and 29's on the I remember the R30's as well.
Eric B Posted November 6, 2015 Share #11 Posted November 6, 2015 In the later 80's, they began switching stuff around more, but the round end door windows (both 15 and 17) were concentrated on the east side more, while 12/14 and the greater concentration of 21/22 and whatever WF 36's on the mainline was mostly on the west side. (17/21/22 could likely be found on any line, being the backbone of the IRT "mixed consists", though 21/22 were very rare on the , and I remember a time when just about anything could be found on the ). R10 2952 Posted November 6, 2015 Share #12 Posted November 6, 2015 I heard the R21/22 formed the backbone of the and at one point... It's a pity they didn't make it into the Redbird paint scheme, but I guess the TA just didn't feel like rebuilding carbon-steel single units and retrofitting them with A/C. Oh well. TheNewYorkElevated Posted November 7, 2015 Share #13 Posted November 7, 2015 I heard the R21/22 formed the backbone of the and at one point... It's a pity they didn't make it into the Redbird paint scheme, but I guess the TA just didn't feel like rebuilding carbon-steel single units and retrofitting them with A/C. Oh well. It mainly had to do with the fact that the R21/22's were introduced in the 1950's, and reached their life expectancy by the time the Rebird paint scheme was introduced. R10 2952 Posted November 7, 2015 Share #14 Posted November 7, 2015 Not so. The R26 cars were from 1959, and the R22s were from 1957. The R26 were rebuilt and became Redbirds; they were configured in married pairs. The R22s were single units, and it's a lot tougher to rebuild and retrofit a single unit with A/C than married pairs. More complex, costly, and would most likely have made the cars too heavy.
